Steeltown Dre
I was working on this as an input for something else but thought I'd share the results. Most of you can already guess or already know which division is the best.... I excluded "inter-division" records because those are meaningless when comparing one division to another (each division will go 12-12 in division games every season). Summed over the last 3 years: Division Vs. In-Conference (non-Div) Vs. Out-of Conference CombinedAFC West 41 - 31 (57%) 27 - 21 (56%) 68 - 52 (57%)AFC North 34 - 38 (47%) 33 - 15 (69%) 67 - 53 (56%)AFC East 33 - 39 (46%) 31 - 17 (65%) 64 - 56 (53%)AFC South 36 - 36 (50%) 27 - 21 (56%) 63 - 57 (53%)NFC East 44 - 28 (61%) 19 - 29 (40%) 63 - 57 (53%)NFC South 33 - 39 (46%) 24 - 24 (50%) 57 - 63 (48%)NFC North 38 - 34 (53%) 14 - 34 (29%) 52 - 68 (43%)NFC West 29 - 43 (40%) 17 - 31 (35%) 46 - 74 (38%) AFC division which performed best against other AFC teams: AFC West NFC division which performed best against other NFC teams: NFC East AFC division which performed worst against other AFC teams: AFC East NFC division which performed worst against other NFC teams: NFC West AFC division which performed best against NFC teams: AFC North NFC division which performed best against AFC teams: NFC South AFC division which performed worst against NFC teams: AFC South/West (tie) NFC division which performed worst against AFC teams: NFC North Best overall: AFC West, 1 game behind AFC North Worst overall: NFC West and 6 games better NFC North Obviously AFC has been the dominant conference. Which division do you see w/ the greatest chance of improvement and which do you think will fall off? I think the NFC West has the greatest chance of improvement, given how bad they have been - 9ers will be getting better and Cardinals can as well. If KC rebuilds and has trouble w/ their QB, I see the AFC West dropping a little behind the AFC North. SD and Den will be solid, but Oak is a way off and. I think Bal, Cincy will be as good, and Pitt should get better. Cle has a way to go. AFC East may also improve w/ the top 3 teams all Mia getting better. Hat Trick
No surprise there honestly, the AFC West is continually among the best division every year, theres usually one bad team, one mediocre and the top 2 are usually 11-5 or better. Bronco Billy
Surprised by the NFC North. They struggle badly against the AFC, but in conference they're pretty solid - and that's where you have to make your bones. Didn't expect that.
Steeltown Dre
Surprised by the NFC North. They struggle badly against the AFC, but in conference they're pretty solid - and that's where you have to make your bones. Didn't expect that. Their NFC record was helped mightly by the Packers in 04 and the Bears the last 2 seasons. The other thing is even at their worst overall record the past 3 years, which was Det last year (3-13), 2 of the 3 wins came against NFC teams outside their division. Which kind of makes sense in a way - your divisional opponents know the best way to beat you and are most familiar with you, and you are not going to get many wins vs. the AFC, so the majority of your wins should come against NFC teams outside your division. That is the case w/ the NFC East and NFC North, winning 22% and 24% respectively against non-Div NFC teams than AFC teams. The NFC South is the suprise, actually winning more vs. the AFC than other non-Div NFC teams. The NFC West won 5% more against non-Div NFC teams than AFC teams, so not nearly as much as the NFC North or East. Here are their records vs NFC teams outside the NFC North: 2006: Chi 6-0 Min 4-2 GB 2-4 Det 2-4 2005: Chi 5-1 Min 3-3 GB 3-3 Det 2-4 2004: GB 4-2 Det 3-3 Min 2-4 Chi 2-4 In stark contrast, the AFC North (for instance) had a losing record in the AFC (47%) but dominated the NFC winning 69%, moving into 2nd place overall. The AFC East also dominated the NFC but struggled in-conference. The AFC West was the most consistent conference, winning 57% in the AFC and 56% in the NFC.
