Repetitive loss buyout program already exists

HANCOCK COUNTY --

Elected officials expressed relief Tuesday over a tentative compromise that may halt a major federal buyout of flood-prone lands in the county, but still provide relief for owners of repetitively flooded properties who want to sell.

In a meeting Monday with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and state Department of Marine Resources, a proposal was made: Local elected officials will drop opposition if a massive buyout proposed by the corps is abandoned and substituted with a repetitive loss buyout that has already been available for years. That program could be effective if it is strengthened by more federal dollars, officials said.
