Official fined for Barnett takedown

Green Bay - National Football League umpire Jim Quirk was notified today that he has been fined one game check -- $8,150 -- for "inappropriate physical contact with players" after he took down Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnett with a chokehold in the second half of last Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears, according to the league.

NFL Executive Vice-President of Football Operations Ray Anderson issued the fine, which can be appealed to Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Quirk was notified in person at the league office in New York this morning. Goodell spoke to Quirk in his office Friday. Goodell also spoke by phone on Thursday to Barnett and Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

The fine covers a similiar incident involving running Jason Snelling of the Atlanta Falcons on a kickoff return in the Atlanta-Tampa Bay game on Dec. 16.

What happened in that game?

Part time officials make $8,000 a game?
