Skilly
Problem: My laptop hard drive is almost full; contains mostly ITunes songs and some videos. This is causing problems when I try to download updates, because it says I don't have enough disk space. Possible solution: I have a 120 gig external drive that I have been backing up my laptop to. Still plenty of room on that sucker. My question: If I backup the itunes files onto the external drive, then delete the files from my laptop, will it then delete the songs out of my ipod when I hook it up and sync it to my playlist? Or, will it leave those songs on my ipod?

I'm not sure if you can update the locations of every file in your playlists automatically or not. I wonder if changing the directory and then running the option to consolidate files would work... To change the location of the iTunes folder: Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab > general tab Edit the iTunes music folder location to a folder on the external drive. Then under the Advanced menu, there is an option to consolidate library, which tries to organize everything into your iTunes folder. It might move everything over and keep your playlists in tact. Where do I go to change the directory? I don't see that option in the menu.

Skilly
Thanks. I checked that out and it looks like that might work. I'll try it tomorrow when I have more time to mess around with it.

These instructions are for a Mac, but it looks like the exact same process I was describing.
