Although it's far from ideal, it makes for incredibly tense and dramatic theater as witness Wednesday's Champions League Final. An alternative is to reduce the number of players per side by one every two minutes after extra time and first goal wins it but UEFA have shown no interest in that mainly because of the length of time games would likely take.
