A question for the tax guys

Someone I know is retired and makes next to nothing.

In 2008:

Filed single.

No dependents (at least legitimately...I dunno if she might have tried to claim her grandchildren who are definitely supported by their father/her son).

She lived with her son for a substantial portion of the year.

She started drawing a minimal amount of SS ($200/mo).

She has minimal to no unearned income.

It is possible that she had no earned income.

As far as I know, the only major financial transaction she had is to buy a forclosure for cash (thus, no write off).

When she was living with her son, I suppose one could argue that she provided some child care (?earned income credit?).

Apparently, she got a $2000 refund from the IRS.

How could that be?

I'm guessing she fudged some numbers. With no to little earned income she didn't even have to file. Also, if she lived with her son & he provided over 50% of her living expenses he could've claimed her. If he claims her she couldn't claim herself then.

Edit for typo.

My thoughts exactly. Something doesnt sound right here or missing a piece of the puzzle.
