Replacing a stolen iphone

OK, so my iphone was ripped in late December. A mere 3 mos. into our contract with AT&T. The cops told me there was a decent chance it could be recovered but, at this point, I'm realizing that it's not going to happen. To tie me over, I bought a crappy go-phone but I've got to get back to something better.

As much as I grew to love the thing, I'm not going to drop what it will cost to get a brand new one ($400). Hell, mine was 3GS which actually costs $600 without signing up for a plan.

Do any of you have insight in terms of how safe and reliable refurbs on e-bay are?

If I can't get a deal, I'm considering a "less cool" phone.
