Automotive Preventative Maintaince

I am the proud owner of a 1995 Ford Escort (4) cylinder with 125,000 miles on it. This car belonged to my mother before I had to take the keys away due to her age age and related problems. Now I want to take the car to my daughter in Pittsburgh, PA. I am trying to do as much as I can to the car now to prevent her from having to carry it to a shop later. I would appreciate your ideas to help me in balancing what should be done and whats a waste of money at this time.

Already done or will be doing:

(4) new tires

Plugs, wires, rotor, cap, air filter within the last year

Oil and filter change

Brakes

Radiator flush

Alternator belt

Battery connections cleaned but will check the age.

Thinking about doing:

Timing belt

Starter

Water pump

You really need to just call me some time as it is easier for me to talk than type.

I would not do the starter as PM but you do want to know when that TBelt was done last. If you don't know then change it and do the WP at the same time. Most places now sell the TBelt tensioner as a part of the WP assembly for that car.

Rarely boot them anymore as the axle costs have come down so much and most are lifetime warranty. The labor to reboot just doesn't make sense anymore.

Yeah Joe, just go with tbimm's suggestions.

tbimm - I thought the 1.9 engine was a non-restrictor, and only the 1.8 required the timing belt change as PM. Or were you just advising that to avoid the headache?

The 1.9 is not an interference engine but a broken timing belt will leave you on the side of the road whether the pistons and valves tangle or not.

ETA: Any engine that uses a timing belt needs the belt replaced at recommended intervals. Usually around 90k is a good mark.
