Bush tried to do something with Fannie and Freddie, but Barney Frank and his ilk, couldn't let that happen! Fannie and Freddie are fiscally sound he said! There is no problem here!

I agree Barney is somewhat culpable but how long had he been in that position when he made that statement? I am 90% sure he was pretty fresh in that seat. Meaning he is very much culpable for the statement above but I would not necessary put a ton of responsibility on him for the whole mess and trust me I AM NOT BARNEY FAN!!! Dodd Frank is an absolute nightmare. BIG problems necessary changes to it cannot be made(if) until 2012. Unfortunately the economy will drag on ground until then.

Grimm, I think you're pretty much right on. It started under willie, shrub exacerbated it, and slobberin' barney threw up what roadblocks he could.

Just like there are too many people in/going to college, too many people owned homes at that time. Gov't, in general (not a particular party) is to blame. It's something they can use to further their power (people feel good about owning homes, banks were making money hand over fist, in turn contributing to pols) and eventually a stiff breeze comes to dump the damned house of cards. It's another example of great intentions/vote buying creates a mess that we now get to clean up. Why does anyone think ANYTHING from gov't is really "free"?

Things were already in a downward path so i would not hang any hat on a barney road block. I honestly thing the man is a political action man. He has created more problems than he helped. Government involvement is driving up the cost of education and not the other way around. As for sub prime mortgages i feel the same. Other peoples money is almost always used in very stupid ways b/c there is no recourse.
