Duchess Jack
By Alex Marvez and Craig Barnes Sun-Sentinel.com Posted July 28 2005, 3:16 PM EDT DAVIE -- The Dolphins signed veteran free agent safety Lance Schulters to a one-year contract Thursday. The team also waived rookie safety Abram Elam, a convicted sex offender who created much controversy upon his arrival last month. Schulters, 30, played in only three games last season for Tennessee because of a left foot injury. He was a three-year starter in Tennessee after signing a six-year, $20 million contract as an unrestricted free agent from San Francisco in 2002. Schulters is expected to immediately challenge Travares Tillman for the starting free safety position. Tillman, who has only seven career starts in five NFL seasons, was signed as an unrestricted free agent from Carolina this offseason. Schulters, a seven-year veteran, originally met with the Dolphins last month following his release from the Titans. Financial details of Schulters' contract were not immediately available. He has 15 career interceptions, but none since 2002 when he had six for the Titans. He was named to the NFC Pro Bowl squad following the 1999 season when he had 63 tackles and six interceptions while with the 49ers. While at Notre Dame in March 2002, Elam was arrested and convicted of sexual battery on female student in October 2003. He was given 18 months suspended sentence, placed on probation for two years and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.
