A Chief's fan killing time

As I sit here waisting time at work today, I ponder on the question that lingered in a lot of Chief's fans minds this year, was Huard better for the team then Green? Now I know most will say Green is the starter and if healthy he should start, no questions asked. Most Chief's fans feel this way and most likely should. Green is our starter and has been the leader of our offense since 2001.

I guess you could say I am a different kind of Chief's fan. It is apparent to me that Green can no longer lead our offense. Comparing what Green did this year to what Huard accomplished will shed some light on this.

Green 2 - 3 as a starter (ignoring week 1, since both Green and Huard played)

1,013 yrds

5 TD's

6 INT's

76.0 passer rating (

wins VS OAK, VS DEN

Losses @ CLE, VS BAL, @ SD

Huard 5 - 3 as a starter

1,824 yrds

11 TD's

1 INT

97.6 passer rating (third highest in NFL)

wins VS SF, @ ARI, VS SD, VS SEA, @ STL

losses @ DEN, @ PIT, @ MIA

I can't help but wonder where we would be if we would have left Huard in charge of the offense. I am not saying that Huard is a better QB then Green, just that the team functions as a whole better with Huard at the helm. A lot of this has to do with the more conservative play calling when Huard is under center, but that is exactly the kind of thinking that wins games. 11TD's to 1 INT is something that cannot be ignored. For years KC has had a very exciting, flashy offense that puts a lot of points on the board but also one that makes a lot of mistakes.

As the season winds to an end and KC spends another promising season at home watching the playoffs, I wonder what can be done to take this team to the next level. Our entire team is about to retire and the necessary preperation for that has yet to take place. I envision many years of rebuilding before this team has a chance at the post season. Lots of questions will have to be answered and a ton of holes filled.

Who is the QB of the future for KC? Green might be done this season, and while Huard did a fantastic job filling in during his absense, is he the future for the Chiefs? I don't think so, but neither is Brady Croyle.

How do we adjust to our aging O line? Roaf is gone and most likely retired. Will Shields is likely right behind him. Weigmann and Waters will be all that remains of one of the best O lines in the NFL.

We have our franchise back, but we have proven he can't win games all by himself, and with the line falling apart we will see just how good he really is.

And then there is the defense, where to begin with them. After spending countless off seasons saying, "This is the year the defense is going to get it done" it actually felt that way in the early parts of the season. But as always they failed to keep it together. It seems no matter how much talent is brought to our defense we just can't get it done. Maybe we need more time to adjust to our new defensive minded HC, but how much time does it take?

Anyways I just needed to get that off my chest. It seems that every year we have a chance to do something special, yet it never materializes and we fall apart at the end of the season.

I guess there is always next year :D

I don't pretend to be any kind of expert on KC but it seems to me that LJ may not be the #2 FF RB lock for next year that most people think he is. Both Jackson and Gore may have a claim to that position.

Anyway, I do think one of KCs biggest issues is the coach. I'm not persuaded that Edwards really has a full plan in place.

They should have kept in Huard just as the Dolphins should have. We could have lived without the Jay Fiedler era.

Huard isn't a youngster and while he played well, I don't think the QB was the problem. I think the defense will contnue to improve. They drafted 2 good safties this year and I would concenntrate on offense this offseason.

Espercially the O line and WR's.

I think Trent is just fine...just not this year. I think they should've IRed him and let him recuperate longer. Huard was doing really well and the team seemed to have rallied around him. I don't see the Chiefs play all that often, but since Green came back they haven't been at all the same. I know it was the Raiders last night and they weren't struggling at all, but they went for it on 4th and 14 after missing consecutive passes and sure enough..threw right back to the same spot and missed again. :D Meh. Granted, LJ did run the ball 30+ times last night too (finally!) but their use of him after Green return seemed to change as they tried to rely on the pass too much and frankly, it knocked my team out of the playoffs. :D
