Derek Anderson gets high tender

While the Browns continue to negotiate a three-year contract with Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson, general manager Phil Savage protected the team to a certain degree by giving the quarterback the first- and third-round tender offer at $2.562 million.

As of Thursday evening, Anderson, getting feelers from teams in need of quarterbacks, was considering rolling the dice and becoming a restricted free agent to see if there were teams willing to sign him to an offer sheet once free agency starts Friday. Savage, talking to the Cleveland media Thursday morning, said another team could make it difficult for the Browns to match an offer if they want him as a starter, although the Browns' plan is to retain Anderson and Brady Quinn as their quarterbacks.

The Browns have offered Anderson a three-year deal for about $20 million. Like Matt Schaub a year ago, Anderson would be a popular restricted free agent. The Browns would have seven days to match any offer Anderson signs. Like the Falcons, who traded Schaub to Houston last winter, the Browns could work out a trade different from the first- and third-round choices required if Anderson leaves on an offer sheet.

Restricted free agent tenders have to be submitted to players by 4 p.m. ET or the player becomes a free agent. Thus, for now, Anderson remains the Browns' starter because of the submission of the tender offer.

Shaub got 6 years-$48 million for wearing a headset. Anderson made the Pro Bowl.

I can't blame Savage for not offering more after just one season, but you gotta figure another team would.

I wouldn't be surprised if Anderson has played his last game as a brown. Someone has to be willing to make a trade that the Browns deem acceptable... If not, they could potentially give up a 1st and a 3rd, depending on how in love the team is with DA.

Derek Anderson has agreed to a multiyear contract to stay with the Browns. NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that it is for three years, with $14 million guaranteed.

The exact terms of the deal are unknown, but the Browns were thought to have increased the contract to a three-year deal worth $21-23 million, with $12 million guaranteed. The deal isn't for the length Matt Schaub got, but it's worth about the same per year.

File this under the "ouch" category for Quinn:

While Brady Quinn says he's ready for a competition, GM Phil Savage says it's not going to happen.

Derek Anderson is going to have lose the job, and it won't happen in practice. "I don’t think there’s going to be an open competition," Browns GM Phil Savage said. "We go in with Derek as the lead horse. You don’t sign a contract like that and say, ‘hey, it’s an open competition.'"

Brady's thought process when signing an incentive-filled contract:

"Cleveland's got Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson. I'll be the starter by November."

Yup.

Another $11 million is available though escalators in 2010 and 2011 based on Quinn taking at least 55% of the snaps in each of the first two years or at least 70% in his third season.

Anderson made himself $4mil in a few hours and made Quinn lose $11mil.
