Greg Jones LB NYG

Recommended Posts

I am shocked he is ranked so low. Any reason? I really think he will be the MLB of the NYG.

Goff was the MLB there and he didnt really do much. I dont know much on Jones, but what makes you think just because he might be the starting MLB, that he will be any more valuable than Goff?

I love where you can draft Jones in IDP drafts for what he brings to the table and the opportunity he fell into.

Dillard waas supposed to be the next NYG MLB but couldn't even manage to beat out Goff, who is a journeyman at best. Jones was a force at Mich St - one of the most productive LB careers in the past decade. He delivers crushing blows, is relentless, takes great angles, scrapes well, fights through trash to get to the ball, and has enough athleticism to track down ball carriers sideline to sideline. He's also a very good person and a locker room leader.

The knock on Jones is that he is relatively short (6'-0") and runs a 4.8 40. So people make the mistake of thinking he's not big enough to play MLB. But think of a guy like Jones-Drew and his height/weight ratio. Jones is thick like that at 240 lbs and he plays faster that his timed speed. He'll struggle covering faster RBs and TEs, but that's generally not what you draft your MLB for in his prime responsibilities, and even while he might struggle to keep up with the faster guys, he understands coverages and manages to get into the right spot a lot.

I considered myself lucky to get him at 4.10 in a 16 team ATAP draft where D scoring numbers are relatively high. In the 14 team TOCOL draft where D players score just a bit lower, an owner took him at 4.04 and if my LBs weren't so solid in that league I would have been targeting him in the back half of the 4th round.

FFers seem to understand what kind of player he is and how well he fits into the Giants' D - in a Tampa 2 he'd struggle aa bit but in NY he fits hand-in-glove, and how open the competition is there. They aren't letting him drop as far in FF drafts as the NFL teams did in their draft where the true MLBs seem to drop further than they should (like a lot of RBs now). I think Jones wins the MLB job outright in the preseason and could hold that spot for 10 years, and the coaches and fans will love him. He's going to be a solid LB2/high LB3 in FF IMO. His tackle numbers will be very good.

the problem with guys in situations like this, are that we have no idea what FA will bring. Ive heard Ruud would be a good fit in NY, and should the Bucs choose not to resign him, then a guy like that could end up taking over the MLB spot for years to come.

Now Im not saying Ruud will be there, just using that as an example. But, like you said, for where he can be drafted, there isnt any real risk in drafting him. I was going to take him in the 5th, but he went a few picks before me.

Yeah, I've heard Ruud's name connected with NYG also, but figured they got Ruud when they drafted Jones. Hoping Ruud goes elsewhere or this kid could end up with a very real wasted chance to be an impact LB.

Goff never materialized and from what I read on Jones is all positive. There isn't alot of competition there that is why I feel he is a good pick in a draft. Jones was also rated pretty high pre-draft.

BB analysis pretty much sums up everything I read on the kid
