Rookie draft

footballguys has a few threads going already about the impact of the draft

on the defensive side.

I think they are going to get my money this year.

I've waited long enough for thehuddle to get the idp side of things up

Just curious why you wouldn't start a thread instead of complaining. Oh well.

 

A few IDP takes:

 

1) If you award more points for DE's than LB's on tackles then very little about this draft would or should make you happy. The prototype 4-3 DE class was already limited to start with and the top tier players went to 3-4 teams which kills DE value.

 

2) The OLB class was not great either as the league is starting to focus more on the bigger players that have some rush skill but are bigger bodies to help in run support.

 

DE's to watch. Chandler Jones. NE has what is called a elephant role which Jones will no doubt play full time by 2013 but this position still has tendency to push players back to LB's for tackles so up ticking the Patriots Inside backers to a degree is warranted.

 

Shea McCellin, was a slight reach IMO but may be the best long term prospect in IDP that awards DE points higher than LB points. He has a high motor and the Bears may see a little Jarred Allen in him. He is number 1 on my board in this type of system but like WR's impact DE's take a few years to develop but worth the wait.

 

Andre Branch is an interesting prospect on two fronts, He needs to add some weight in my view to be a 3 down player at DE and if he can without losing his burst he could be a very good play in a couple of years. On the flip side, this pick could be a telling signal that the Jags may be transitioning to a 3-4 scheme in which case he could be an OLB sooner than later which makes him a risky pick.

 

Vinny Curry is the heir apparent to Babin in my view and while worth a roster spot he could really hurt DE value of both Babin and Cole. Today he is more of a one trick pony speed guy that will get some reps at the expense of Babin mainly in my view. If I owned Babin I would want this kid on my roster but I would not be real happy that the Eagles took him due to value hit on a dynasty roster.

 

Bruce Irvin was an interesting pick to say the least. No way he is big enough to be a 3-down 4-3 DE. He has a great first step and looks to be an ideal 3-4 OLB. Depending on league scoring he is worth a shot. Today in their scheme, he is a part time player. While none of the pundits discussed this pick other than shock value, this could be a very telling defensive transition pick. He is a sack specialist in any scheme but fantasy wise, one trick ponies are widely inconsistent so that headache will go to another owners roster in our league.

 

While I loved the Cowboys pick of Tyrone Chandler as an NFL player due to a superior run support skill set, they are worthless IDP players due to scheme unless your league really gives out big tackle points at the position. He will ensure that Ware remains a serious sack artists as he will demand serious blocking assets be used against him. I would really upgrade S. Lee at LB due to this selection.

 

ILB's

 

My take is outside of Kuechly this is a very weak draft class. More concerning is where Kuechly landed. The Panthers sure look like they are primed to transition to a 3-4 scheme and that could hurt the value of several players. He is a player that reminds me a lot of Sean Lee, which I really like but it is a little early to know his real fantasy impact. Even though he could kill value of of other players for Several Fantasy Owners, I have him easily rated the #1 on IDP draft boards. He just went 1.5 in our rookie draft that has complex balanced scoring between offense and defense but felt that was a little high due to long term concerns but he could prove to to be a great pick. He has no weakness as an ILB and while he should stay there, their is a risk he could be a SAM due to coverage skill which would destroy value in a 4-3 scheme.

 

 

The other ILB of note is Dont'a Hightower may be a good player but not someone even on my draft board. While he could be a solid Pro player, I do not draft ILB's that are this big. The speed at the NFL is such he may be a two down player so I will gladly let others draft him. He is solid in run support but players this big at this age have a tendency to get bigger and he can't afford any weight that further diminish speed or he will end up being a short situational DE in a year or two. Two much situational packages already in NE so I would avoid this player as he will never wear the green dot on his helmet.

 

 

Safeties:

 

Barron is going to be a beast. He is my second rated IDP player. I typically don't draft Defensive backs very high in IDP in our league because of salary cap concerns and DB's are a dime a dozen for the most part but this kid is real special. He has ball skills close to Eric Berry and makes the game look pretty easy in run support. He is on my radar at 2.2 in our 14 team league. He looks like 14 point play starting week 1.

 

Harrison Smith is also a kid that has good ball skills and a big brain for the game. I actually do not mark him down due to his FS tag even though SS is a better IDP position in our league from a consistency standpoint. He will in the Vikings scheme drop into run support often and will be a solid contributor week one. He went to a great place for his skill set. What he lacks in speed he makes up for in recognition skill.

 

The only other safety I like is Brandon Taylor. He was guy not on board because he is weak in pass coverage but he went to the ideal situation in San Diego due to scheme. He is terrific in run support and will not be called on much in man situations. While I doubt seriously I would draft him in IDP he could be a pleasant surprise in leagues that reward high tackle points.

I'm trying to figure out how good Mychal Kendricks can be. Seems he will fall in at OLB (hopefully WLB) and appears to be a 3 down guy. His career is at ILB, but he seems to have the tools to score a lot in IDP. Have not seen him play at all though.

Poe created quite a buzz pre-draft with his combine workout. Running a 4.95 40 yard dash isn’t usually going to turn many heads, at least not in a good way. That is unless you are a behemoth of a man that stands 6’3” tall and weighs 346 pounds, run a 4.95 at that size and you are sure to create a buzz, especially when you also put up 44 reps at 225 lbs. in the bench press. A number that was just 5 short of the combine record, set by Stephen Paea in 2011. Even with a strong combine, Poe was not expected to be the first DT off the board, but the Kansas City Chiefs thought otherwise, nabbing Poe with the 11^th pick. Poe will fit nicely in Rome Crennel’s 3-4 defense, helping to anchor a defensive line where he will be flanked by two former top 5 draft picks, Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson. The Chiefs gave up the 7^th fewest yards rushing last year, but Poe should help the defense improve on their 14^th ranking of 4.2 ypc allowed. If Poe can live up to the potential that he has, and learn to play hard all the time then the Chiefs will be happy with their 1^st round selection. Otherwise, the Chiefs will have drafted a guy that many will say had enough red flags to see that he had bust potential.

 

Fantasy Impact/Value

Redraft: Next to none, even in deep leagues that utilize the DT position.

Dynasty: Same as redraft, next to no value. The Chiefs DT position hasn’t exactly been a boon for fantasy owners, but if you are in a deep enough league (16 teams+) then stashing Poe on upside alone makes some sense.
