As mentioned above and emphasized by those interviewed in the story, it sounds like it was a VERY bad decision by a superior on the other end of a radio to split up the unit that was the root of the cause in this situation. Since they were inexperienced they saw that weapon his Afghani mate had and assumed he was the enemy(who were firing on the second unit).
