Breaking News: Passenger cleared

05:53 PM EDT on Friday, March 23, 2007

The passenger who caused a flight landing in Charlotte to be quarantined after claiming he had smallpox does not have the disease, said Carolinas Medical Center spokesperson Scott White.

Passengers aboard a US Airways flight from New Orleans to Charlotte were quarantined after that passenger, who airline officials said was intoxicated, shouted that he had exposed everyone to smallpox.

The health department authorized local paramedics to take that person off Flight 1014 to be tested. Meanwhile, under federal guidelines, all 113 passengers had to stay put until the threat could be confirmed or proven false.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the Mecklenburg County Health Department, and US Airways officials are on the scene. From AirStar6, officials in full hazmat suits could be seen walking to and from the plane.
