This is the 'surge' we were sold on that was intended to prevent this from happening by calling up units?

How in the wide wide world of sports are we getting our ass handed to us over there?

urban warfare aint easy in the 1st place. we would win hands down if we could just drop a bomb, but these frucks are intertwined into the society. women and children blowing themselves up. plus they dont care about dying.

Nice try, but poor planning, overly rosy assessment and no plan to implement for a transistional govt has more to do with this than anything.

Let's see more than 2 examples of women and children blowing themselves up in Iraq please. And keep in mind that 2 examples would be a fraction of a single percent if you could succeed in doing that. Otherwise that claim is simply baseless.

It took us less time to beat Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan and >cough< fascist Italy. Are you satisfied with mediocrity?

But that's not what Rumsfeld said:

• 2003: Rumsfeld “Doubts” the War Will Last Six Months. During a town hall meeting with troops, Rumsfeld said that if the US went to war in Iraq, although “it is not knowable if force will be used, but if it is to be used, it is not knowable how long that conflict would last. It could last, you know, six days, six weeks. I doubt six months.” [Town Hall Meeting, 2/7/03]

Gates Announces Longer Tours in Iraq

PAULINE JELINEK | AP | April 11, 2007 03:12 PM EST

WASHINGTON — Beginning immediately, all active-duty Army soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan will serve 15-month tours _ three months longer than the usual standard, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday.

"This policy is a difficult but necessary interim step," Gates told a Pentagon news conference.

He said it does not affect the Marine Corps.

Thanks. It's still f'n ridiculous. If this level of manpower is required, sack up and institute a draft.

Baseless?

You must be 14 years old. They had been handed their ass by us and been pushed back all the way to their borders, we dropped the bomb to save them and us massive civilian casulties.

Do you really think Truman said: "We'll never win because they're using kamikazees on us so let's drop the bomb?" Are you that stoopid? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Downfall Notice something different? We're already inside the Iraqi borders. The bomb was to prevent us from fighting our way into the Japanese ones.

Not to mention it was a signal to Russia not to mess with us as well. But you probably think the Warsaw Pact is a band, right?

you forgot the "and us" part. Estimated US casualtiees in Operation Downfall:

Casualty estimates were based on the experience of the preceding campaigns, drawing different lessons:

In a study done by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in April, the figures of 7.45 casualties/1,000 man-days and 1.78 fatalities/1,000 man-days were developed. This implied that a 90-day Olympic campaign would cost 456,000 casualties, including 109,000 dead or missing. If Coronet took another 90 days, the combined cost would be 1,200,000 casualties, with 267,000 fatalities.

A study done by Adm. Nimitz's staff in May estimated 49,000 casualties in the first 30 days, including 5,000 at sea.[31] A study done by Gen. MacArthur's staff in June estimated 23,000 in the first 30 days and 125,000 after 120 days.[32] When these figures were questioned by Gen. Marshall, MacArthur submitted a revised estimate of 105,000, in part by deducting wounded men able to return to duty.

In a conference with President Truman on 18 June, Marshall, taking the Battle of Luzon as the best model for Olympic, thought the Americans would suffer 31,000 casualties in the first 30 days (and ultimately 20% of Japanese casualties, which implied a total of 70,000 casualties).[34] Adm. Leahy, more impressed by the Battle of Okinawa, thought the American forces would suffer a 35% casualty rate (implying an ultimate toll of 268,000).[35] Admiral King thought that casualties in the first 30 days would fall between Luzon and Okinawa, i.e., between 31,000 and 41,000.
