The Early Word: McCain Cancels Fund-Raiser

By SARAH WHEATON

The vetting wars have claimed their latest casualty. The McCain campaign has canceled a fund-raiser at the home of an 86-year-old Texas oilman, Clayton Williams, after ABC News and The Washington Post questioned the campaign about comments Mr. Williams made in a 1990 Texas gubernatorial election.

Mr. Williams was running against Ann Richards when he made a joke about rape and said he would campaign against Ms. Richards as he would a cow on his ranch: “head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt.” He ultimately apologized for the remarks.

“These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time it was scheduled,” said Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the McCain campaign. “It’s positive that he did apologize at the time, but the comments are nonetheless offensive.”

The Democratic National Committee is calling on Mr. McCain to return $300,000 that Mr. Williams already collected for the Arizona senator, but a McCain official indicated that the campaign is not inclined to do so.

I appreciate political gamesmanship as much as the next guy, but I must admit, this is getting stupid. Both campaigns are taking their concerns about avoiding the apperance of impropriety to the extreme. The McCain campaign cancels a fundraiser because of 1 sentence uttered 20 years ago (for which he later apologized). Both campaigns have been shedding personnel right and left because of varying degrees of impropriety. Are we deep enough in it yet to concede that everyone involved in politics has some dirt on them, or a skeleton in the closet and then move forward? Why else appoint anyone, or schedule anything, because ultimately, you know they did or said something stupid in the last decade or so.

I appreciate the sentiment and the effort, but ultimately these kinds of games are going to take away from the discussion of issues.
