Samson
With a real Vernon Davis, Crabtree coming into the fold, Gore and a better team around him, can Alex Smith make this go around successful? Is he poised to become a solid backup fantasy QB?
Big Mac Bears
I personally think it's too early to tell. He certainly has the opportunity but it will be interesting to see what happens when teams start shifting more coverage to Vernon Davis. If he can go out next week and throw 3 TDs to different receivers, I think you'll have more data to answer that question.

Considering they travel to Indy this week, if he doesn't do as much I'd still say the "data" is inconclusive. As someone who has had a carousel of backups to start the season, I'll take a flyer on him. After Indy, SF QB's schedule is pretty sweet... TEN, CHI, JAC, and DET in week 16. The rest are middle of the road pass Ds with zero terrible matchups. Also mixed in there are some pretty good run Ds which might force another HOU-type game. He has some decent options in Crabtree, Morgan, Bruce, and Davis. Meh, why not if your backup is lacking?
Jackass
Well, it's looking like the optimism over the Alex Smith resurgence needs to be reeled in a bit...
