Colston opens camp on PUP list: The Saints announced Thursday that WR Marques Colston will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury. General manager Mickey Loomis disclosed Thursday that Colston had a lingering knee issue and had an offseason procedure done. Loomis anticipates Colston to be able to leave the PUP list by some time next week, simply saying that his star receiver was "close, but not quite ready to go," according to WWL-TV.

Just another in a series for this cat...

Does this possibly bump Meachem a bit? I know a lot of people are passing on him since his TD ratio most likely won't be as high, but could this mean a little better overall workload, at least early in the season?

Injuries are so hit and miss, and they're probably just playing it safe with Colston since he's a vet. He can step in without practicing and be an impact player. I don't think this really means much in the grand scheme of things.

Receiver Marques Colston was a surprise addition to the New Orleans Saints' injury list Thursday when the team revealed he had arthroscopic surgery to clean up his left knee a few weeks ago.

He joined fellow receiver Robert Meachem (toe), safety Darren Sharper (knee) and linebacker Clint Ingram (knee) on the team's physically-unable-to-perform list heading into Friday's first set of two-a-day practices.

Colston isn't expected to miss much practice time, though. General Manager Mickey Loomis said Colston was able to pass the team's conditioning test during his rehab work Wednesday, and that he expects him to be "full go" by early next week.

"There wasn't a (specific) play where it got injured," Saints Coach Sean Payton said, explaining that Colston had been feeling "the end of the season soreness" after summer minicamp and organized team activities.

"It was, 'Hey, let's take a look at this, let's get this cleaned up,'" Payton said.

Colston had a more significant surgery performed on the left knee in February 2009, but he was fully healthy in time for training camp last year and played the entire season without any setbacks.

Loomis said he also expects Meachem, Sharper and Ingram to be back to full speed within the next week or two.

He said Ingram should be back around the same time as Colston, while "Darren and Robert might take a week longer."

"We expect all these guys to be participating in practice full-go prior to the first preseason game (Aug. 12 at New England)," Loomis said.

In Sharper's absence, Loomis said converted cornerbacks Malcolm Jenkins and Usama Young likely will take turns rotating in with the first-string defense at free safety.
