Auto repair question

How much should it cost to replace both front axles and a leaky oil gasket on a 98 Civic? My brother is thinking about buying it but it needs work. Wondering if the repairs will turn a seemingly good deal into a bad one.

It only has one front axle, right? Couldn't tell you how much it costs to rebuild a differential on that car. I'd guess between $500 and a grand. And is the oil gasket on the oil pan or valve cover? Either way it's a cheap fix unless the valve cover is not real accessible.

I had a new '98 Civic EX, black with a white pin stripe, and it was one of my favorite vehicles ever. Nothing to brag about, call it a rice burner if you will, but I was 27, single, living in Atlanta and it was a lot of fun to drive. I remember blasting the CD player and just driving for hours around the rich neighborhoods in Buckhead and Sandy Springs just for the sheer joy of it. It was what I could afford at the time and I actually miss that car to this day. Lots of memories.

Buddah was in the ballpark on the halfshafts (axles, and double-agent, there are two), depending on the quality of part and how hungry the shop is for the business. As for the gasket, it'll depend on where it is. A head gasket will cost you $300 or more. Valve-cover gasket you might get done for $50 (not familiar with what's on top of the valve cover on that car). An oil pan gasket or rear main seal will be somewhere in between.
