Grant Hill had a grenade go off in his ankle. This is not the same. Here is the article from Hill's second (first surgery in spring of '00) injury:

Hill Out for Season

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 27 - Orlando Magic forward Grant Hill will miss the remainder of the 2000-01 regular season due to an injured left ankle, General Manager John Gabriel announced today. Hill will undergo surgery and is expected to go through a six-to eight-month rehabilitation process.

"After gathering all of the information over the past few weeks, in what has been an exhausting process, our conclusions have led us to this point," said Gabriel. "Our focus is to put Grant Hill in the best possible position to return as the player that we all know he is. We have great confidence in the outcome and wish Grant a speedy recovery."

Hill (6-8, 225, 10/5/72) was acquired by Orlando on Aug. 3 in a sign-and-trade deal with Detroit in exchange for Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace. He appeared in four games this season for the Magic, averaging 13.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.25 steals in 33.3 minutes per game. Hill was originally injured at the end of the 1999-2000 season and underwent surgery on April 28 to repair his medial malleolus (inside bone on his left ankle).

"This procedure involves removing the plate and five screws, and inserting a bone graft from his pelvis, while also re-inserting new screws," said team physician Dr. Joe Billings, who will observe the surgery performed by a physician to be announced. "We feel this operation will give Grant the best chance at a full recovery."

Hill has played in 439 career NBA regular season outings, averaging 21.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.59 steals in 39.0 minutes per game. He has also appeared in 15 career playoff contests, averaging 19.6 ppg., 6.9 rpg., 5.6 apg. and 1.20 stlpg. in 36.6 minpg. Hill was originally drafted in the first round (third overall) by the Pistons in the 1994 NBA Draft.

"We are very disappointed by this development, but the ultimate goal is to get Grant Hill healthy and back in uniform," said Head Coach Doc Rivers. "Our goals as a team remain the same, and we look forward to the battles and challenges ahead. We feel the same way today about Grant as we did the day we signed him, and we look forward to him helping us in the future."

Hill had started in the NBA All-Star Game five consecutive times and led the league in voting twice (1995, 1996). He was named to the All-NBA First Team and captured the IBM Award, which measures a player's overall contributions to his team, in 1996-97. Hill was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 1995-96, 1997-98, 1998-99 and 1999-2000. He shared the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 1994-95 with Jason Kidd, and earned All-Rookie First Team honors.

"Obviously this isn't the way that I wanted to begin my Magic career," Hill said. "I want to take this opportunity to thank my teammates, the coaching staff, the Magic organization and the fans for their support and well wishes. I am optimistic about the rehab process and look forward to getting back onto the court and helping this team achieve its ultimate goals."

"Hill concerned about NFL star

BY JOHN DENTON

FLORIDA TODAY

ORLANDO -- When Grant Hill heard that Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens would be having ankle surgery in Baltimore, the Orlando Magic star forward couldn't help but cringe.

Owens tore ligaments in his ankle and fractured a bone in his leg Sunday when he was pulled down from behind by Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams. He had surgery Wednesday to have two screws and a metal plate inserted in his ankle. The procedure was performed by Dr. Mark Myerson, the same doctor who operated on Hill's ankle in 2000 and 2001. Knowing that Owens is putting his future in the hands of Myerson, a foot and ankle specialist, worried Hill.

"(Myerson) is putting it out there that he was the one who got Grant Hill back, and we all know that wasn't the case," Hill said with a smirk. "I wasted my time with him."

Hill ultimately left Myerson's care and had a more involved procedure performed in 2003 by Dr. James Nunley at the Duke Medical Center in North Carolina. Nunley broke Hill's heal and realigned it with his lower leg. Limited to just 47 games in his first four seasons with the Magic, Hill has played in 23 of 24 games and is second on the team in scoring (19.7 ppg.).

The Eagles are hoping that Owens can return in six weeks and play in the Super Bowl should they get that far. Hill, who has had the screws and plates inserted in his ankle three different times, scoffed at Owens being able to return that soon."

"Celebrity docs" are interesting creatures ... sounds like this one isn't getting Grant to do an ambulance chaser advertisement for him any time soon ...

Here's hoping TO doesn't follow in Grant's limp steps -- and that's from someone who has traditionally liked to bash TO ... but he played hard this year and seemed to be a decent teammate -- but winning cures a lot of ills. Regardless, I'd like to see the guy healthy.
