Positional Rankings from '04

The top kicker last year (Vinatieri) scored 18% more points than the next kicker, 25% more than the 8th kicker (Kaeding), and 34% more pts than the 16th kicker (Christie). Consider yourself lucky to get the top kicker.

The top QB (Manning) scored 6% more than the next (Culpepper), 21% more than the 3rd best (McNabb), 35% more than the 8th best (Brees), and 51% more than the 16th QB (Palmer). It was basically a 2 horse race but with McNabb (3rd) also spread from the next best players. The top two or three QBs are worth having. The next tier is worth waiting for.

The top RB (Alexander) scored only 1% more than the next (Tomlinson), 29% more than the 8th best (Westbrook), and 37% more than the 16th (Pittman). The only significant drop off is between 7th (Dillon) and 8th (Westbrook). Based on last year’s scoring you’d want to have a top seven back and get two top players of course. It’s worth noticing that the Priest was in the top 10 with only 7 ½ games played. Both Blaylock and Larry Johnson appear in the top 30 as well. This also appears to be the list where the names will be shuffled the most in the rankings.

The top TE (Gates) scored 11% more than the next (Gonzo), 30% more than the 3rd best (Witten), 48% more than the 8th (Wiggins), and 68% more than the 16th best (Dilger). Again, another 2 horse race, but the shallow end of the pool comes up much sooner and with significant drops on the way there. You’d want the top two or even three at this postion but waiting for that 4th one would be an excellent idea.

The top WR (Muhammad, of course) scored 7% more than the next best (TO), 18% more than the 8th (Wayne), 30% more than the 16th (Kennison), and 46% more than the 32nd (Roy W). There were no significant drop offs along the way. How likely is it that we will see three Colts in the top 11 again? There are also plenty of seasoned players in the top 20. How much longer can they hold off the younger talent?

If the Jets get their act together, Nugent will be in place of Vinatieri. The guy flat out kicks the ball.

Also, who woulda thunk with Alexander, CuMar, and Gates I didn't even make the playoffs last year ... combination of my QB's getting same points as waterboys and being a league where we played our division twice (three of our division teams were strong and made the playoffs).

Oh well ... I am determined to change the outcome this year.
