Cap Room and FA Shopping.....

The Jets were reported to have been in an abysmal condition, cap-wise.... but it's not true now, if it ever was.

With cuts and signings, the Jets are now 10 mil under the present (no CBA) cap, and that includes Abaraham's franchise tag price of 8.3 mil. Once he's gone, (and he will be, one way or another), the Jets will be about 18.5 mil under the present cap. With a new CBA, more like 28.5 mil.

If there is no new CBA, teams will have to leave some wiggle room for incentives, (of the NLTBE -Not Likely To Be Erarned- variety) which would hit the cap immediately, as soon as the incentives are reached during the season, as opposed to having them count against next year's cap if there is a new CBA in place. In the case of the Jets, the most dangerous NLTBE incentives are Pennington's.... if he plays a full 16 games as a starter, it's another 9 mil. (In this case, his playing incentives fall under the NLTBE variety because he only played in three games last year, wierd formula).

How are the other teams looking now? Chime in with any homer info you might have!

The Colts were an estimated $10 million over after losing an arbitrator's ruling on transferring roster bonuses into signing bonuses for Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison. There's a thread in this forum about it. The Indy Star reported yesterday that the Colts did end up re-negotiating both deals, and are right against the cap now. That's good becasue they've been re-signing guys like crazy in the last few weeks. MLB Gary Brackett, DE Raheem Brock, and WR Reggie Wayne were all signed to long-term deals. WLB Cato June and DE Robert Mathis were tendered one year offers as restricted free agents. DT Montae Reagor also agreed to re-structure his deal. If the CBA gets extended, they are in even better shape, and could try to get a deal for Edgerrin James done. SLB David Thornton has still not be signed either. The Colts don't usually go after other team's free agents. Corey Simon the exception.

-13.5 M

The Broncos were built to win in 2005 -- and their precarious cap situation heading into next season isn't pretty. The good news is that there are just a handful of players on the roster, such as Champ Bailey and Trevor Pryce, who could help supply instant cap relief. John Lynch has already done his part.

The Ricky talks have been spoiled and the TO talks lessened not sure but I think I heard something about us trying to aquire Edge. Ask yourself this now Edge in Denver or Larry Johnson in KC hard to imagine 2 2k runners next year ain't it.

The Eagles are 19 million below before releasing TO.

This number includes the presence of one Terrell Owens, whom we all know will be releasied or traded in the coming weeks. Of course, with the unamortized portion of his original $10 M signing bonus escalating against the cap, that may not be a cap saver.

I really want to know what the Redskins are going to do.

We'll see Cap'n it's a shame to see the visor crew be broken up (Marcus Washington) but I think that Arrington is grossly underrated this year.

$$$ it takes to have Arrington vs. his actual production = :D

Most cap web sites are not up to date..... I got my info from some very smart, hopelessly addicted Jets fans who really know their stuff, and some even have their own web sites just to track the Jets' numbers.

For instance, PFT said that Pennington's contract is a one year-see ya later deal, and they are horribly wrong about that. The deal Pennington signed all but garantees he can't be cut for 3 years. To cut him in 2007 would cost three times what it would cost to keep him, cap-wise.
