CHARGERS REPORT

Merriman 'antsy' to return

November 27, 2006

Shawne Merriman is ready to return, to show he is still great and however those steroids got in his body they were not the reason he dominated.

“I'll come back like I never left,” Merriman said by phone. “I'll just continue to show I'm one of the best players there is.”

Merriman plans to be at the Chargers' complex early this morning, as his four-game suspension for testing positive for the steroid nandrolone is over.

Merriman, who maintains the positive test was the result of a tainted over-the-counter supplement, has been working out once or twice a day.

He has helped build a house for a charity organization in New Orleans and done other charity work in his home state of Maryland.

He returned to San Diego from Maryland earlier than planned, Friday evening, following his annual coat drive at his alma mater.

“I'm so antsy,” he said. “ . . . I was hungry before I left. Now I'm starving. I just feel sorry for anybody that has to go against me.”

He planned to work out during yesterday's game, as he has had trouble watching the Chargers play on television during his time away.

While no one could honestly have expected the Chargers to go 4-0 without him, Merriman said he was not surprised.

“There is so much talent on that team,” he said. “They've fought through adversity all year. It hurt them that I was gone, but they obviously kept going.”

Merriman was tied for the NFL lead with 8½ sacks when he left. He has fallen to fifth.

He knows what he left on the field. The Chargers faced porous offensive lines in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Oakland.

“I'd probably have 15 sacks right now,” he acknowledged. “But I don't see why it's not possible for me to have 15 (by the end of the season).”

He will have five games to do it.

“He's going to smack somebody right upside the head,” safety Bhawoh Jue said. “Somebody is going to pay for those four games.”

Keg would say no. :D

the bait smells....not gonna get back into the pissing match but here are a few things to chew on...

after this past week(his highest scoring output of the season) he ranks #28 in avg points scored for LBs in FUSION Scoring(which is the scoring system used when players are ranked by the huddle)

so currently he is #28 at 13.125 pts/game

oh and what would his avg be without this past weeks monster game?

11.92 pts/game which would be good enough for #48

I will still stand by what I said earlier this year...and would even be willing to look at his number prorated for his missed time.

oh and just for good measure:

o.k. Keg. I guess you got it all figured out. Six tackles per game, (very attainable), times 16 games = 96 tackles. Throw in turn-overs, sacks, and scores, (plus FF,PD)...I say top-10.

:D

I still say he makes a pretty good #3 LB in a 32 team leauge, :D

I don't want to get into it either. In my league he would be a bit higher. Something you just can't seem to grasp that I have already explained is you get additional points for multiple sacks in a game,(in my league), which can add up nicely. No one could have forseen a 4 game suspension. Merriman is my #3 or 4 LB.

oh, and just for good measure: I already conceded my initial projections were too high....but it's very gracious of you to dig up old posts anyway. :D

Never Sit Merriman. No other linebacker has the ability to put up the points that Meriman does on a given week. He is a game changer.

going by weekly avg merriman comes in at #23 his best 2 weeks of the year? 21.50pts and 20.50pts

the following is a list of guys that not only score on avg more then merriman on a weekly basis but also with the games they have scored more then merrimans best 2 games

from lowest rank to highest:

Simms 22pts

Brackett 22pts & 24pts

Trotter 21pts & 23pts

Brooking 28pts

Farrior 21pts

Morrison 23pts & 23pts

June 23pts & 25pts

Witherspoon 21.50pts, 21.50pts, 21.50pts, 22pts

Hawk 24pts, 24pts, 24.50pts, 25pts

Ray Ray 20.50pts, 24pts

Pierce 21pts, 22pts, 25.50pts

ZachThomas 21pts, 21.50pts, 23pts

Urlacher 22pts, 35pts

Quarles 24pts

Edwards 24, 29, 30

Briggs 21.50, 31

Bullucks 22, 22, 25,25, 26

Fletcher 22, 23.5, 27, 40.50

Ryans 23.5, 25, 27, 41.50

now for a few guys that are ranked under Merrimans points/game:

Al Wilson 22, 31

Bruschi 22, 23.5

David Thornton 25, 25

Julian Peterson 24,24

EJ Henderson 21.5, 26

EJ is the one that is farthest off of Merrimans weekly avg but only by 1.713pts

some guys that have games bigger then Merriman:

Godfrey has a 22.5 and 27pt game

I think it is safe to say that Merrimans NFL ability is unbelievable but I think that many but to much stock in his value from a FF prospective(disclaimer: scoring systems matter :D ) ...there is always the chance that Merriman GOES off but even when he does it is easy to see that his BEST games arent any better then lots of LBers...

hel1 even if merriman were listed as a DL Jason Taylor and Jared Allen would be right there with him in ppg and in "BIG WEEKS"

let's not forget Merriman missed 4 opportunities to have "BIG WEEKS"...(you could argue for or against him on that one)

scoring system ABSOLUTELY matters....in my league multiple sacks increase point totals -(but somehow he's ranked lower in my league than yours!)

but, anyway you dice it he's an excellent #3 LB...a spot he was easily attainable @ in most drafts this wear.

we already know where we each stand but for me merriman is exactly what I dont want in a #3...that is if i have 2 very nice LB 1 & 2s then I want my LB3 to be a solid point getter...dont want to deal with major ups and downs...now if you LB1&2 are weaker then maybe you need a player like Merriman that can have the big week to help bail you out...imo merriman makes a nice #fill in the blank(1st backup) that you can play a matchup with if you want to...but for me I'll pass...oh and Hook its funny he is rated lower in your scoring system(but that is probably because you are looking at yrly stats, i was kind enough to pull the weekly avg stats just for you)

ETA: in a H2H league merriman can harm you just as much as help you, in a total points league Merriman would be a greater asset imo since his fluctuations wont hurt you
