FALCONS: Schaub offer protects team's interests

The Falcons will tender restricted free agent quarterback Matt Schaub a one-year qualifying offer of more than $2 million today, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Monday. Included in that tender is the requirement that if another team signs the highly regarded backup, it must compensate the Falcons with first- and third-round draft picks.

The main reason the Falcons tendered Schaub the offer was to ensure their right to match any offer made from another team or at least get something in return if a team is willing to part with the draft picks to acquire the three-year veteran.

Schaub could be viewed by some teams as a starter. For Atlanta, the 25-year-old is considered insurance for starter Michael Vick, who started all 16 games last season and 15 games in 2005.

In three seasons, Schaub has two starts and has completed 84 of 161 passes for 1,033 yards with six touchdowns with six interceptions.

The NFL's free agency period begins after midnight Friday.

ESPNews reports Atlanta Falcons restricted free agent QB Matt Schaub will be tendered a one-year qualifying offer of more than $2.35 million by the team. Should another team sign Schaub away from the Falcons, they would receive a first- and third-round pick in return.

Fantasy Impact: He'll be hard to move with those picks coming back in return.

A first and third round pick is an awful lot to give up for Schaub...

This has a sign & trade deal written all over it.

You think Schaub doesn't want out of ATL after having to watch Vick's putrid QB play from the bench & knowing that he'd never be given a fair chance of competing for the job? If ATL waits a year, Schaub can walk as a UFA and ATL gets nothing.

If ATL is going to redeem anything on their investment in Schaub, they have to deal him this year.

It makes sense. Atlanta needs a backup QB and Schaub is better than anyone they are going to get. At least this way if they do lose him, they would get a lot of value back for him. As a UFA in 2008, he's as good as gone.
