Hornung & Karris were both given lifetime suspensions for gambling (and their stats while playing were not erased, btw). There is a precedence to ban a player forever from playing in the NFL again - and Vick's transgressions certainly included gambling as well as placed him in a position to be manipulated by outside influences & potentially be leveraged to affect games in a negative manner as a result.
