Draft Lottery

Pros and Cons of implementing a draft lottery?

Currently the winner of the consolation bracket (teams that don't make the playoffs) receives the first pick of the draft. Runner up receives the 2nd pick and so on.

Thinking of implementing a draft lottery to add an extra element into the league. The winner of the consolation bracket in this situation will have the best opportunity to win the 1st pick.

Just want to hear some opinions or if anyone has used a draft lottery to determine draft order and how it worked out.

Thanks!

Trying a draft lottery in a local I just joined this year so can't say much to that yet. Can say though that it determines the order used to choose your draft position much like Darin mentioned above.

the best thing we've done in yrs in my leagues is letting people choose they're draft spot. Everyone loves it

yeah in another thread i contemplating doing a draft lottery, NBA style with the ping pong balls (but probably more like names out of a hat) .... you could buy extra "balls" for $5 each, which would go to the league kitty.... first name out of the hat gets to pick their slot, etc. etc....

I like this system because it keeps all the owners interested the whole year. I hate when owners go on autopilot after they out of playoff contention.

Why is the 1st pick the best pick?

If you're going to give the winner of the consolation bracket anything, I would give them the choice of their draft slot. Not everyone likes the #1 pick.

Believe it or not, I actually tried to push this for my league- almost everyone shot it down! I thought it was a great compromise because like you, I don't think the 1st pick is always the best option.

It sure does. Two years back we had it where the last place team gets the first pick. Like you said above the managers that were out of the playoffs stopped caring. So this does ensure managers stay engaged and fight until the end.

The draft lottery is a cool idea. Does anybody here like authenticity when determining the order, such as emulating the NHL or NBA?

Or do you guys like being original?

I'm going full NBA draft lottery mode. I'm going to have 5 ping pong balls labeled 0-4, which will have 120 possible combinations. The team that wins the consolation bracket will have the best chance of winning the lottery 26% or 31 total number combinations out of the total 120. The runner up will obviously have slightly less odds than the winner of the consolation bracket.

The only thing I am doing differently than the NBA lottery is that even the champion of the league will have the opportunity to win the lottery, a 1% chance or 1 number combination, but the chance is still there.

Like Darin3 posted above the 1st pick is not always the best pick in the draft. I actually did some research for our league and over the last 4 years the two teams that have made it to the championship game have picked below the 3rd overall pick only twice- one team picking 1st overall and one team picking 2nd overall. The remaining 6 teams have all drafted after the 5th overall with picks coming at 7th overall twice, 8th overall once, 9th overall once, and 10th overall twice.

Pretty interesting!
