Big Country
Agreed BC. Limit poker is a weird game. Jamming a pot preflop (while always correct with a big hand) prices other players in to make calls on draws later in the hand, and with the limits, there is often no way to push them off of it. I stay away from limit games, overall I have lost at them. I do best at mid level buy in tournies (and by mid level I mean 50-250.) See, I started poker as a 7-stud guy. Much better game than Hold Em, but nowadays there is not enough money or players in it. SO, that made the transition to limit poker easy. In limit poker, it is a very mathematical game. Figuring out the odds if you are priced to call with a hand like 89 suited or not because there are already 5 callers in, etc. SO, you must jam with big hands, calculate the odds, and know that long term, if you play the math right, you will end up ahead. Only recently have I started focusing on tourney play other than sit n gos, and I am really enjoying it.... helps to have had a nice run of success. I like some of the smaller sites as they ususally only get 150-250 players, which means I dont have to commit 6 hours to a tourney against 2000 players, but often can get the same payout for a good finish. muck
7 card stud Four final guys (Chan busted in 7th) 1. David Williams 2. John Hoang 3. Jack Duncan 4. Mitchell Ledis ...#3 & #4 have about the same number of chips and are severely short stacked... Hoang has about 60% as many chips as Williams. I don't think there was anyone of note in the top 16 other than Williams and Chan.

TDFFFreak
I've been playing alot of limit poker lately (at slightly lower limits than $50k/$100k ) - I think if you play a very tight, by-the-book game, you can win at low stakes (say up to $3/$6) limit poker at a 10-man table fairly consistently. But it's pretty hard to maintain the discipline - playing by-the-book means you are folding pre-flop an extremely high percentage of the time, and quite frankly it's not even that much fun, although it is profitable. I've been playing at 6-man tables, and while I'm winning more than I'm losing, I'm still trying to find the right balance between the extremely tight approach that works for a 10-man table and the extremely aggressive approach that I think works at HU. You can't win long-term at 6-man tables without looseining up your starting hand requirements (versus what is preached in the various books out there, which is seemingly always catered to a full table game), but I'm still struggling to find the right balance. On-line limit games are where it's at. Play multi-tables (I play 3) and folding many hands pre-flop isn't so bad. I do agree that it's more of a numbers game, but patience is ultimately what is going to win you the money over the long haul.

Just checked it after I saw your post, and Ivey just took a big hit, losing about 40% of his stack and is now #11 ... and Chris Ferguson just busted at #17 (apparently, he doesn't know he's on my team and we only get paid for top 16 finishes). I stick to low limits, but easily 3 table the 2-4 and 3-6 games and have turned a tidy profit over the years. (Nothing extraordinary, but enough to buy a few nice gifts each year) But, as noted in a previous post, I am working on my tourney game now, so now I generally play in a tourney and have a low limit cash game going so I dont get impatient in the tourney.
