Zooty
We got in a discussion at work about coaches who have had a similar type of success as Pete Carroll. Obviously no one has had as much but this is the question. Name a coach who 1- He was never a head coach until he got a NFL head coaching position 2- He was an unsuccessful NFL head coach 3- He then went to college as a HC (was never previously a college HC) and was successful Oh, I don't have the answer and I don't know if there is one. The best I could do was June Jones who had moderate success at Hawaii. I guess Chan Gailey and Callahan have some potential to do it. Anyone???? Chavez
Lou Holtz? Holtz Nice save on the edit - to save everyone from clicking on the link, Holtz was head man at William and Mary and NC State before taking on the Jets job. I was going to suggest Al Groh, though his results at UVA have been spotty at best.

Chavez
and Mike Shula Dave Shula coached the Bengals, not Mike. Though both proved themselves to be apples fallen far from Big Daddy Don's tree.

I guess Chan Gailey and Callahan have some potential to do it. Actually, if you look back, Hawaii has been a relatively successful program over the years. June Jones hasn't vaulted them to major status, but I think they have themselves in the unenviable position of being a mid-major that no true major really wants to play (a la Boise State). Gailey and Callahan look to have their programs on the right track, but haven't gotten there yet. I think Jerry Glanville may have just gotten the head job at West Texas State or something (wiki'ed it and nope, he's still Hawai'i's def coord).
