Dr. Love
Anybody care to point me in the right direction as a noob interested in Usenet? PS - This has nothing to do with wanting a new way to get music after f'n Yahoo bought Musicmatch, turned the product into absolute feces, and then doubled the price for inferior service. Nothing at all. I just want news and junk.
godtomsatan
I haven't used usenet on a regular basis since about 1999......What exactly are you looking for? Do a search with "usenet" and your particular topic that's probably the best place to start.

Yeah, I did a Google search before posting this, but the sites that come up seem... well... kind of sleazy. Not in a good porno kind of sleazy way, but in the Nigerian bank account kind of way. Okay, not that bad, but they still seemed less than trustworthy. I just don't want to be the chump.

Honestly, since the advent of blogs and solid user-interface for forums like this, I'm not really sure what lurks in usenet land anymore anyway. You looking for wire service links? Why not use a google reader or any other rss feed reader?

godtomsatan
See, I was being sarcastic about not wanting to steal music... Oh, I just use kazaa or limewire for that. Or just get CDs from the library and burn them from there.
Ursa Majoris
Usenet is still useful for.....many things. Get yourself a newsreader (Outlook Express has one built in), configure it to point at your ISP news server and select from the over 35,000 newsgroups that are out there. The ones that begin with alt. are....interesting, so I'm told. My favorite group name was alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die

MrTed46
See, I was being sarcastic about not wanting to steal music... I use usenet regularly so ask away. google GrabIt It is the best program for accessing newsgroups it even has a cool search feature for like $1 a month. The actual software is free. Free newsgroups suck since retention is horrible. I use astraweb (google them) about $15 a month. They are fast and their retention time is great. Edit: Disclaimer: If big brother is watching - I dont steal and neither should you! Edited July 11, 2007 by MrTed46
