Complete different career direction

Long story short, I have been in the financial service industry for 27 years.

I receive a call out of left field, this morning. A friend has offered me the job of service manager at his 5-bay auto service center. Went from 3 - 5 bays one year back. He has done some interviewing with recommendations from within his industry and feels he would rather bring someone with my combo of business experience, way with #s and level of integrity :D to run the office & whatever sales is required while dealing with the customers.

He is VERY well aware that I don't know the difference between an oil filter & a cigarette filter.

Without going into the $, hours . . . yada . . . how have your experiences been with a similar turn of the wheel?

I have never made a change like this. The only question I have is how much to you value your friendship with the person that offered you the job. The only reason that I ask is because I have seen friendships get ruined when working for someone that you are friends with.

Made the switch 15 years ago from retail management to teaching. Cost me 15k, but the time it allowed me to spend with my wife and son was worth every penny. Love the holidays and weekends off, but miss the urgency and competitive nature of the business world at times.

I'm guessing if you make the switch and it doesn't work out, since you have so much experience in the financial service industry it wouldn't be a problem getting back into it?

Good luck either way.
