driveby
Blacklisted by History, The Untold Story of Senator Joseph McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies," Loved this review; Evans brings out some facts that are generally not known about McCarthy. Yet even if McCarthy was above reproach in conducting his investigations, it would not change the fact that this book, like McCarthy's investigations, is based on a false premise--that being a Communist is a bad thing. To save the "smear the author" crowd some time, his bio: M. Stanton Evans was a Director of the National Journalism Center in Washington until September 2002. He was also editor and publisher of its magazine, Consumers' Research. Evans graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of arts in 1955 and subsequently did graduate work in economics at New York University and was awarded honorary doctorates from Syracuse, Grove City and Francisco Marroquin Universities. Between 1960 and 1974 he was the editor of Indianapolis News and a syndicated columnist between 1973 and 1985. According to his biographical note he was a commentator with WGMA, Radio America and Voice of America between 1982 and 1992, with National Public Radio between 1980 and 1992 and CBS Radio between 1971 and 1979 and CBS Television between 1971 and 1974. He was author of a number of books including Revolt on the campus, The Liberal Establishment, The Politics of Surrender, The Future of Conservatism, The Lawbreakers, Clear and Present Dangers, the Theme is Freedom. A biographical profile of him among internal Philip Morris documents also listed him as a Visiting Professor of Journalism at Troy State University, Contributing Editor and columnist to Human Events and the Chairman of Education and Research Institute. sourcewatch
Chavez
I think it's pretty apparent that even though McCarthy WASN'T completely wrong, his campaign was conducted with as much, if not more, concern for the career of Joe McCarthy than for the good of the United States. Ursa Majoris
He was paranoid and his legacy is by no means dead. The paranoia levels in this country, fueled by a worthless and sensationalist press, are amazingly high. Is there a more fearful place in terms of fear of the unknown and the unlikely? WaterMan
McCarthy was what I would never want to happen in this country. He'd make a good President for Russia.
