dmarc117
Perfect counterpoint to DMD's plea for responsible discussion in the political arena. Prosecutors say that trip was arranged by Muthanna Al-Hanooti, a Michigan charity official, who was charged Wednesday with setting up the junket at the behest of Saddam's regime. Iraqi intelligence officials allegedly paid for the trip through an intermediary and rewarded Al-Hanooti with 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil. What exactly do you call it when US lawmakers take trips to our enemy's? I think they should be taken before a firing squad personally. I believe that is called DIPLOMACY. I know the use of the term has fallen out of fashion, but hopefully it will come back into vogue around January next year. westvirginia
Perfect counterpoint to DMD's plea for responsible discussion in the political arena. What's irresponsible about it? H8 is right, and is being unusually non-inflammatory here.

Wouldn't diplomacy be more properly the perview of the State department?
cre8tiff
What's irresponsible about it? H8 is right, and is being unusually non-inflammatory here. H8Tank didn't post it, dmarc did. Basically, the article says Saddam secretly paid for these dude's trip. They had no knowledge, and didn't change any position they had as a result. They travelled to Iraq as the guest of a "Save the Children" type of organization. All state they would not have taken the trip had they known Saddam paid for it. They are not being exposed as counter spies or traitors. Even this story from a right-wing rag of a site can't paint them as guilty of anything. It is a non-story and as such the title "The Enemy Within" is in itself inflammatory and not backed by anything relevant.

Ursa Majoris
And what did they hope to accomplish? Wouldn't diplomacy be more properly the perview of the State department? It would if the State Department wasn't just the creature of a warmongering clique.

H8tank
Well, this ain't gonna help ya kommrad cr8tin! EVEN BEFORE the Baghdad boys left Iraq, media outlets throughout the Middle East gleefully highlighted divisions in the U.S. government and the travels by the "antiwar" congressmen. The Iraq Daily, for example, published by Saddam's Ministry of Information, printed daily updates of the trip and posted them in English on their website. For example, a September 30 report says, "the members of the U.S. Congress delegation has underlined that this visit aims to get acquainted with the truth of Iraq's people sufferings due to ongoing embargo which caused shortage in food and medicine for all Iraqi people." (That article appeared next to a report on Saddam's continuing financial support for the families of Palestinian suicide bombers or, to use the paper's formulation, "intrepid Palestinian uprising martyrs." Also in that issue is an article by American white supremacist Matthew Hale, "Truth About 9-11: How Jewish Manipulation Killed Thousands.")... So how does it feel to be used as a propaganda tool against your own country? McDermott, who was asked that question by CNN's Jane Arraf when he was still in Baghdad, said it feels fine. "If being used means that we're highlighting the suffering of Iraqi children, or any children, then, yes, we don't mind being used." 10/14/2002
