Doesn't Madden basically play with the teams from the previous NFL season anyway? Favre still was playing, and playing rather nicely I'd say. From what i understand, whether he signs the papers or not doesn't really matter, at least as far as his retirement goes. Even if he signs the papers, he can still come back and play.
