dmarc117
Phelps' diet - which involves ingesting 4,000 calories every time he sits down for a meal - resembles that of a reckless overeater rather than an Olympian. Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase "Breakfast of Champions" by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise. He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes. At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks. For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza. He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks. http://www.nypost.com/seven/08132008/news/...orge_124248.htm and he burns it all

AtomicCEO
I chuckled last night because in the "Day in Phelps Life" montage, they showed him pouring some Fruity Pebbles into a bowl.

piratesownninjas
He'll be 500 pounds by age 40. His body kind of requires this much food for the work he does. I'm sure his diet will be normal as soon as his olympic days are over.
The Holy Roller
I read a book this summer about the Lewis and Clark expedition and Stephen Ambrose (the author) stated that those men ate about 10,000 calories a day. When they could find food. In Marine boot camp 7-8K a day was the norm. It all depends on how active you're going to be. The problem really is when you get out of that life style of a lot of physical activity and you still eat like a famine is due tomorrow. cre8tiff
I had a friend in college who was on the swim team. He struggled to down as many calories as he needed. He carted around a backpack full of snack food and actually groaned when the time came for him to have to eat the candy bars, twinkies, sodas, etc. He tried to shave it back and lost like 3 pounds of muscle mass in a very short time. His coach was PISSED. Edited August 13, 2008 by cre8tiff
