My thought on voting for GWB was that he appointed both Bernanke and Paulson ... so, if they screw up, it still will fall to Bush for putting them forward in the first place. His net worth (in the several hundred million range) would have allowed him to just mail it in, put everything he has in TIPS (the inflation protected US Treasury bills) and said, "F-it, someone else can deal with this crap." He didn't. He's rolled up his sleeves and has jumped right in. I don't know about Bernanke's net worth; he may need a job. Bush didn't need to work, either. He was loaded before becoming the POTUS. ...my point being, none of these guys had to take on this sort of responsibility... I mean, who'd want to have to clean up the biggest financial mess in over 75yrs? Not me. Would I try, if asked? Probably. Would I voluntarily sign up for it? Probably not. Bush probably had no idea this was in the pipeline 8yrs ago. However, Bernanke and Paulson both knew dicey waters were coming when they took their gigs (prolly didn't expect it to be like this, but they knew it wouldn't be like it was under Greenspan).
