Skippy
My girl is in 7th grade in a brand new Science and Technology academy that is part of the public school district. She does about 1.5 hours a night after an extented school day so she really looks forward to the weekends for a break. This school is very demanding but she is very into it but they told us all upfront that the children would really have to be committed to school if they are going to stay at this Science and Technology school. I sort of wish it was a little less just because her day starts at 5:45am and does not really end until about 8pm.
irish
My kids attend a pretty dang good school. Some nights there is none at all and some there is quite a bit. From what I understand a lot of it depends on how well they are soaking up what she is teaching to the class. I think with it being a really inonvative school and the new teaching methods they use the kids pick up everything really fast. They don't even use chalkboards anymore They use computers and a special overhead projector on a screen the teacher can write on that is really invisible. I'd have to look up the system. Its new this year and I was just blow away. Technology is cool! They don't even teach the ABC's in order any longer, there is a whole new learning system that helps them read and write better. My kids are going to pwn me! That may be a Smart Board they are using. They have a type of pointer that has to be calibrated for each use but it's interactive with all online resources. We have those where I work. I teach 4th grade and don't give anywhere near 2 hours of HW a night. Don't get me wrong, there are some rough nights with test prep or projects but for the most part it's 30 minutes to an hour tops and that doesn't include the expected story prior to bed (20 minutes). ETA: I have 2 kids- a 3rd grader and one in Kindergarten. My 3rd grader has about 45 minutes to an hour of HW and my one in K barely has any. Maybe a worksheet here or there but we're told to just read daily/nightly with her as that's the best thing we can do. However, as a teacher, I'm also working on stuff with both as I know what they need to be doing and what they need, not just to do well on standardized testing but just for the real world in general.
