bpwallace49
So my computer seems to have a virus/Trojan horse and it going vatAthena. Can anyone walk me through fixing it so I don't have to go to the Geek Squad? I would greatly appreciate it.
Hugh 0ne
Update your Virus Protection and run a full scan. Download and run Malwarebytes free anti-malware software. That usually works. Might want to stop frequenting porn sites as well. Edited January 18, 2012 by Hugh 0ne
Hugh 0ne
If that doesn't work you need to post details of the problem.
bpwallace49
Should I open the computer in safe mode to download?
Hugh 0ne
Should I open the computer in safe mode to download? If it lets you. If not, maybe download it to a USB stick, then start in safe mode and install and run the malwarebytes. bpwallace49
Can I just do a system restore from a few days ago?
Hugh 0ne
Can I just do a system restore from a few days ago? I assumed you wanted to remove the problems and didn't have other options, that's what my advice was for. If system restore is an option, you could try that first. matt770
Reformat hard drive, do a clean install of Windows7. Remove the hard drive, take it apart and physically destroy all disk(s) inside. Purchase new hard drive, reinstall windows. Re-download all screensavers and cute cat pictures. Write down all your URLs, resumes, recipes, etc on a legal pad before you do any of this, then type them back into your new hard drive so you have them again. Take one last look at your pictures before you destroy them (memories last a lifetime).

I don't have another PC to download onto a USB and transfer. Thanks for the help. Seriously.

rocknrobn26
Late to the party... All good advice ('cept for matt). Never EVER call the Geek Squad!!! I found a little father and son place here in Winfield. They do good work and are very reasonable. Carry in only, but you could ask if they would come out. Let me know if you want their #. Square
Might want to stop frequenting porn sites as well. Whoa, whoa, whoa, let's not get crazy.

Thanks Tom! I was able to muddle through a system restore to a previous time, plus download malware bytes and run a scan. Everything is great now. The damn virus was attacking my Norton and disabling security features, then opening up to more robust attacks. i will def keep you in mind if this happens again! gilthorp
I'm pretty sure you are nerdy enough to handle this issue all on your own, but felt the need to play the "I'm not geeky" card today. I'm not fooled.
bpwallace49
Oh no. I am absolutely not qualified enough Gil. But enough people were able to walk me through it.
