rajncajn
Saw this posted on another board & thought it was rather funny. There have been 514 Leap Years since Caesar created it in 45BC. Without the extra day every 4 years, today would be July 28, 2013. Since the Mayan calendar did not account for Leap Year, technically the world should have ended 7 months ago. Anything significant happen 7 months ago?
Big John
Actually 499 since years ending in 00 not divisible by 400 are not leap years But the point is still the same
delusions of grandeur
This is not true. The Mayans are known for their clander being extremely accurate and tied to astronomy. Reform came to Rome (and later to the Western world) via the Egyptians, who—along with the Maya and possibly the Babylonians—were among the first to determine the true length of the solar year. It is proven to be more accurate than the Gregorian calender that it influenced. Thus, I have to assume that their calender ends on the Winter solstice on 2012, not necessarily because they were able to determine that this day corresponded between the calenders, but because this corresponds with the end a last 5,214 day solar cycle in which the winter solstice occurs as well. The date is tied to astronomy, not correspondence between calenders. That said, I'm no 2012 theorist, but there is a rhyme and reson, not jsut an arbitrary date that their calender ends on, and it corresponds 100% to astronomy (solstices and solar/moon cycles evident through atronomy), not a man-made calender.
