muck
This is it... 1. San Francisco: Braylon Edwards, WR, Michigan ...and, since he was clandistinely signed early Saturday morning, he is immediately traded to San Diego for Drew Brees... Getting a solid vertical threat for the passing games is the main area to be addressed by the Bolts. The 'brain trust' is pretty confident that Williamson will be off the board at 1.12, Clayton isn't fast enough, and Chris Henry (2nd or 3rd round) has too many question marks. Further, the cost to trade up a few spots to get Williamson isn't THAT much more than trading up all the way to 1.01 to get Edwards...and they feel the dropoff from Edwards to Williamson to be bigger than the incremental cost in getting him. Plus, SF gets a 'proven' player to take the reigns who will be cheaper than the #1 overall pick...which also frees up additional cap space for SD to sign their three first round picks (#12 and #28 to come). 2. Miami: Alex Smith, QB, Utah Saban is disappointed that no one offered enough to make the drop-down worthwhile...however, he knows he has a good prospect for the "QB of the future" and can afford to have him sit for a year or two while he learns under Frerotte and/or Feely. Besides, he knows he can believe Ricky telling him that he's coming back... 3. Tampa Bay (via Cleveland): Cadillac Williams, RB, Auburn Jon Gruden sends 1.05 and his two third round picks to Cleveland for 1.03, and proptly takes his "RB of the future." Pittman just isn't cutting it any more...look for some help on the offensive line as the draft unwinds. Besides, Gruden doesn't believe stories out of Chicago that they're looking at Benson. Phil Savage is more than happy to take the extra "day one" picks. 4. Chicago: Derrick Johnson, LB, Texas LB tandem for several years...Urlacher and Johnson... I just don't buy the need to replace Thomas Jones...who was averaging 150yds and 1.5 TDs per game before Grossman went down. 5. Minnesota (via Cleveland (via Tampa Bay)): Troy Williamson, WR, South Carolina Shooting up draft boards across the country, and nervous that Fisher would trade out of 1.06 to someone else coveting him, Tice and Co. trade 1.07, plus their 2nd and 4th round picks to Cleveland. Williamson is a hard worker and very fast; only one of those characteristics can be said to apply to the former #1 WR in Minnesota. I'm not convinced he's not a WR version of a "workout warrior." Time will tell... 6. Tennessee: Pac Man Jones, CB, West Virginia Jeff Fisher NEEDS this to work out. CB is a gaping hole and Jones can also help out quite a bit on kick/punt return duties since Eddie Berlin is out. 7. Cleveland (via Minnesota): Aaron Rodgers, QB, Cal Phil Savage and Co. are more than happy to have picked up Gruden's two third round picks, plus Minnesota's 2nd and 4th rounders and still get the guy they wanted (since Edwards was off the board early on) at 1.07. 8. Arizona: Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn After calling Buffalo to ask one final time, "Shelton for Henry, straight up?" and getting a "no" (again), he takes Ronnie Brown...and is extatic! A "real" running back! 9. Washington: Carlos Rogers, CB, Auburn Tempted to go with Mike Williams, however, the gaping hole at CB is even more glaring than their gaping hole at WR. Tried desparately to trade down, but, no one was interested in helping out Dan Snyder... PS - Snyder likes guys who are fast and Rogers is the fastest CB in the draft. 10. Detroit: Shawne Merriman, DE/LB, Maryland Best value on the board and helps fill a position of some need. Very tempted by Alex Barron, but, elect to focus on the d-line first. 11. Dallas: Antrel Rolle, CB, Miami Dallas tries to trade out of the pick, but, can't find offers worth dropping for, so they snag a very very solid young CB...puts tons of pressure on Terrance Newman. 12. Tampa Bay (via San Diego): Mike Williams, WR, USC Andy Reid and his stash of picks offered up 1.31, 2.35, 3.77 and 5.146 (their first pick in each round) to San Diego...however, Schottenheimer shot it down...because...Gruden had just called to offer their first rounder in 2006, 3rd rounder in 2006 and 2nd rounder this year (2.36) for this pick. Why? Because SD believes that TBs pick next year will be WAY at the top of the draft and because the 2nd rounder they offer up in this years' draft will yield them a very good player on either the offensive or defensive line. Gruden now has nothing to do until the second day of the draft, but, he leaves with Cadillac Williams and Mike Williams...not a bad haul at all! 13. Houston: Alex Barron, OT, Miami David Carr needs more protection and Dom Davis could use better lanes to run through. Capers is more than happy to take the large tackle a few spots lower than he was projected to go! 14. Carolina: Mark Clayton, WR, Oklahoma Lots of options here; Clayton is the most "game ready" WR at the top of the draft...runs solid routes. 15. Philadelphia (via Kansas City): Demarcus Ware, DE/LB, Troy Carl Peterson takes Andy Reid up on his offer (Houston and Carolina turned him down as well) of 1.31, 2.35, 3.77 and 5.146 for their first round pick...primarily because of the additional flexability afforded with the acquisition of Patrick Surtain. Besides, it allows KC to recoup the 2nd rounder traded for Mr. Surtain. Reid is extatic to get the help with his speed rush (thinking of Tom Brady calmly sitting in the pocket really pisses him off). Ware has oodles of speed. Oodles. 16. New Orleans: Jason Campbell, QB, Auburn Aaron Brooks has pretty much worn out his welcome. He has one year to turn it around. Don't forget, they drafted Deuce McCallister the year before they traded Ricky Williams... 17. Cincinnati: Travis Johnson, DT, Florida State A solid player for a team pushing for the playoffs. 18. Minnesota: Cedric Benson, RB, Texas Hard nosed RB for 25 carries a game. Just what Tice wants. Not a bad first round...speed at WR and toughness at RB. 19. St. Louis: Matt Jones, WR/TE, Arkansas "The offensive genius" does it again. Rams fans give off a collective groan... 20. Dallas: Jamaal Brown, OT, Oklahoma Tuna needs more protection for Bledsoe/Testeverde/whomever, primarily because these guys, while being NFL QBs, are not to be confused with agile athletes. Tuna just missed out on Merriman, and was usurped by Andy Reid for Ware... 21. Jacksonville: Kalif Barnes, OT, Washington Not 100% sure Barnes will translate to LT in the NFL, the need is large and Barnes is a real prospect for the job. He should help with pass protection and opening holes for the ever-older Fred Taylor. 22. Baltimore: Marcus Spears, DE, LSU Mark Clayton, being long gone, and Matt Jones just taken, Billick and Newsome turn their eyes towards the defense, and snag Spears 5-10 picks below where many think he'll go. A very solid value and should provide some very solid pass rush help. 23. Kansas City (via Seattle): Thomas Davis, S/LB, Georgia KC takes their recently acquired 1.31, 3.77 and 5.146 from Philly, and adding in their 4th rounder (4.116), KC moves up to snag Thomas Davis just in front of Green Bay. Davis should play OLB for KC, as he'll be fast enough the help out in coverage and has a knack for hitting hard. 24. Green Bay: Brodney Pool, S, Talented safety (biggest need by a mile) and rising on many boards... 25. Washington: Charlie Frye, QB, Akron Mr. Ramsey, please bring your visor to mini-camp...and, if you don't have one from last year, maybe Mr. Brunnell will let you borrow one of his. 26. Oakland (via NY Jets): Channing Crowder, LB, Florida Bad boy Crowder will fit right in in Oakland...and possibly start coming out of the gate. The best "pure" linebacker in the draft... 27. Atlanta: Roddy White, WR, UAB Tall and fast; has the potential to become the #1 WR that Atlanta so desparately needs... Also, a solid route-runner, and so could help out right away. 28. San Diego: Erasmus James, DE, Wisconsin Because they have another pick coming up soon, SD believes (rightly so) they can take a bit more risk, and opt for the large upside of Mr. James, over David Pollock. 29. Indianapolis: Darryl Blackstock, LB, Virginia Solid LB who should provide Dungy with some nice pressure on the QB...which would prove to be very helpful in the playoffs... 30. Pittsburgh: Justin Miller, CB, Clemson A very solid CB prospect, which should prove to be an upgrade over the existing duo. Also, would have looked VERY long and hard at Roddy White had he slipped past Atlanta. 31. Seattle (via Kansas City (via Philadelphia)): David Pollock, DE, Georgia Big motor. And, Seattle needs loads of defensive help after a very rough offseason. 32. New England: Fabian Washington, CB, Nebraska Fast + Need = good pick Edited April 23, 2005 by muck
Skilly
Muck, you have both Cleveland and New Orleans taking Aaron Rogers. I like the trade scenarios through the top of the draft. I would make the draft MUCH more interesting if these actually happen.
Brewer
Muck, good work, but do you have rogers going 7th and 16th? Edit: darn you're fast Skilly. Beat me to it. Edited April 23, 2005 by Brewer

Brewer
What do you Chicago homers think about their selection? I'm not a homer, but I agree with Muck and don't see the need to jump on a replacement for Jones. Any other insight?

I love this shucks. Wouldn't it be funny if New Orleans really DID select Rogers after he had been taken? They could be the new Minnesota of draft days. ................there's no Vikings fans lurking, are there?

I can see some confusion if there are some trades made at the top of the order. Although, you would hope that with all of time put into preparing for this, that teams cough:vikings:cough would be prepared for any situation. I could even see them taking one of the big OL, Barron or Brown. Gotta protect Rex. But Johnson and Ulracher roaming around together...........man that would be sweet! Actually, considering Ulracher's injury history, maybe they take Johnson just to have in case Ulracher goes down again.
