I play in a non TE league and the last couple years have been trying to figure out where to place Gates and Gonzo. Gates may be top 20 material. Wat u think? :D

Gates is a top 15 WR easily....

top 10 is stretching it....but a case could easily be made...

I could easily see Gates as a top 20 WR in mos scoring set ups ... and a top 10-15 would not be totally unreasonable.

Gonzo on the other hand? Much more difficult to say, imo. I think Gonzo has a little bit more upside and quite a bit more downside than Gates...so, where to take him is a bit more nebulous. You know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all that stuff...

Agree and this year even more so. 100 yards and 10 TD's last year put him about 12. With a rookie QB it could be top 10, but I would put him at about 12.

With Roaf gone he may have fewer opportunities, like last year. I like Heap a little better this year. McNair seems to be bonding very well with him so far.

We do not require a TE in our league and I have him as the #12 receiver on my sheet. Well done! :D

Clearly you missed the Carl Peterson interview where he stated that he was giving Willie a free pass at camp, he is welcome back at anytime. Well over half the team has called him and he hasn't called ANYONE back, yet Peterson and Edwards both stated they knew where he was, what he was doing and they were respecting his decisions. Willie ONLY fake retired to avoid traning camp(where he got hurt last year BTW), the fines and to spend more time with his family. Willie PROMISED Shields and the organization that he would be back, WILL and Wille had a mutual agreement, they would only come back if the other would. Have you seen Will change his mind since Willie has? Nope, that's cause deep down everyone in this org knows he's coming back Rip me all you want for it, if it doesn't happen then I'll be the first to admit that I'm wrong.

Oh and BTW he hasn't filed for retirement with the National Football League, he merely wrote a letter to the org stating as such. And we don't even really know that's what the letter said, it might have said, I don't want to be in camp, I want to do such and such during that time, listed his reasons for it and they all spoke and gave him a pass. There is a mutal repect there from Roaf and the Chiefs. You may think I'm full of it, but I still think he's coming back.

Plus, And I watched the Chiefs camp special on NFL Network the other night and he stated that Mike Solari (the new O coord) came to him when he got the job and asked Tony what plays he wanted for them to run for him. Tony said that is all they have been running for him, the plays HE wants to run(red zone). Reading the article seals what I had already projected to happen this year, Tony will be a red zone target, 20 to 5 yard libe they will rely on him heavily. I think Tony might have his best season yet. Call me crazy, but I'm thinking 1200 yards and 12 Touchdowns (career high i believe).

:D

I know, I know, I am a homer :D

I missed it but read this morning that Willie said he wasn't coming back. This story-Wa. Times

No changing Roaf's mind

By David Elfin

August 11, 2006

Willie Roaf supposedly surprised the Kansas City Chiefs by retiring on the day players reported to camp, but the 11-time Pro Bowl lineman said he informed the Chiefs of his plans in May.

"If I felt I could play like I used to play, I'd play again," said Roaf, a left offensive tackle. "I started running around and my legs were bothering me. I kind of knew right then that I would need to do this. I'm 36. I have to face that fact."

New coach Herman Edwards is still hoping for an about-face.

"Sometimes they change their minds," Edwards said. "Sometimes you have to sit back after ... a decision like that and ponder it."

Roaf said his decision is final and has nothing to do with Edwards, adding, "I respect my teammates too much to go out there and play at a level that I'm not used to."

The Chiefs signed Kyle Turley this spring after right tackle John Welbourn retired. The club is gambling that the former New Orleans Saints and St. Louis Rams starter -- who was made infamous as a Saint by ripping off the helmet of an opponent and tossing it far downfield -- can still play after sitting out two years with back problems.

I play in a non TE league and the last couple years have been trying to figure out where to place Gates and Gonzo. Gates may be top 20 material. Wat u think? :D

Just in case you missed it:

RIVER FALLS, Wis. | Fantasy football is not my thing. People often ask: “What running back do you think I should take in the 12th round?” or “Who do you think will end up with more tackles, Lance Briggs or Gibril Wilson?” I know nothing about it.

But I will give you a little free fantasy football advice, and you can decide whether to use it. Here you go: Find a way to draft Tony Gonzalez. Call it a feeling.

“Some of these young tight ends are talking trash, you know?” Gonzalez says. He smiles and leaves the rest unspoken. Tony Gonzalez is 30 years old. He’s rich. He’s famous. He’s Hollywood huge. He’s been to seven Pro Bowls. So what’s left? Two things. Gonzalez wants to win a Super Bowl. And he wants to show those young tight ends — and everyone else — that he’s the greatest tight end to ever play professional football. It’s legacy time.

Gonzalez figures he has four years to make that legacy real. Five at most.

“My best years are coming,” he says. I think he’s right. Sure, he’s already had huge statistical years. He caught 102 passes in 2004. He’s gone for more than 1,200 yards twice — no other tight end has done that. He has more touchdown catches right now than any tight end already in the Hall of Fame.

But I think he might just have his biggest season. Why? Call it a feeling. And look at this team. The receivers are, well, let’s call them “inexperienced.” The quarterback, Trent Green, is one of the most accurate passers in the NFL. The coach, Herm Edwards, wants an offense that controls the clock and overpowers defenses. The running back, Larry Johnson, is perhaps the most feared offensive player in football.

Add all that up, and what do you get? I think you get a 6-foot-5 tight end with suction-cup hands running free behind the charging linebackers and making catch after catch in the heart of the defense.

I bounce my theory off of Gonzalez. He seems pretty happy with it.

“Yeah, I think I’m going to be a bigger part of things,” he says. “I mean, not to sound brash or anything, but it is our best interest to make me a big part of this offense, right? I think I’ve proven that I can help the Chiefs win. It just makes sense, right?”

It does make sense. Gonzalez is still a bit miffed about last season. He had another Pro Bowl season — 78 catches, 905 yards — but he caught only two touchdown passes, the fewest since his second season in the NFL. He wants more touchdowns, for the team, for himself; he wants touchdowns because he believes he should score touchdowns.

Gonzalez felt that Al Saunders, the old offensive coordinator, was obviously great at his job but he was always trying to trick defenses. He would never call the same play twice; often he wouldn’t call the same play in a month. Teams were expecting Gonzalez to get the ball around the end zone, which is precisely why the Chiefs did not throw to him.

Gonzalez has a different philosophy.

“My philosophy is, ‘Do your thing and make the defense stop you,’ ” Gonzalez says. He’s lucky because that’s precisely the way the new coaches feel, too. He won’t be a decoy under Herm Edwards. At one point after practice, Gonzalez came up to Edwards to ask about a play when rookie defensive end Tamba Hali beat Gonzalez to the quarterback.

Gonzalez: “I looked at the video. Do you think he beat me?” Edwards: “Oh, yeah, he beat you. Guy’s pretty good, isn’t he?” Gonzalez: “You sure he beat me?” Edwards: “He beat you. But that’s not your job. That’s not your job. Your job is to catch touchdown passes.”

Gonzalez laughed. It’s no wonder Edwards is so beloved by players. Herm knows just the right things to say.

“It’s nothing against coach (Dick) Vermeil or coach Saunders or any of those other guys, because we had success with them,” Gonzalez says. “But there’s no doubt that there’s some new excitement now about this team. There’s a new energy. We feel like we’re all pulling in the same direction.

“This is the best team I’ve ever been a part of. We have at least four guys on defense who could go to the Pro Bowl this year. … And we still have the offense. We’re going to score points. This is the year. I can feel that.”

Yes, he’s thinking playoffs and the Super Bowl. But along the way, sure, Gonzalez would like to send a clear message to tight ends — Jeremy Shockey, Vernon Davis, Alge Crumpler, Kellen Winslow and especially San Diego’s Antonio Gates — that he is still supreme. People have started to talk about those other tight ends, and he doesn’t like it.

“Ask the coaches,” Gonzalez says. “Ask the players. Ask anyone. I’m in the best shape of my life. I’m smarter and more experienced. Yeah, I think this is going to be a big year. Ask anyone.” Ask anyone? OK, I go to ask Chiefs president/CEO/general manager/wine steward Carl Peterson if Gonzalez will have a big year. Peterson says: “Oh, yes. I think the way we’ll be on offense, the way defenses will have to defend our running game, the way he’s played in camp, yes, absolutely, I think he will have an incredible year.”

So there you have it. If you are in a fantasy football league, you won’t want to let Gonzalez go past the second or third round …

“One other thing,” Peterson says.

What’s that?

“It’s also a contract year.”

Contract year? Call it a feeling. You better draft him even higher.

and I'm done highjacking the thread, second day in a row :D

and to answer your question yes, he's in the top 20 and has finished higher

Sorry, call me a skeptic, but I still don't believe it one bit. Why would this come out in a WISC paper, nothing local :D BTW willie was the 26th highest paid tackle in the league last year, I'm sure that has nothing to do with it either :D Not to say this isn't creditable, I'm just not buying it, especially when Willie is supposedly out of the country :D

Depends on how your leagues scores for WR's. If they score with catches, yards and TDs, then Gates would rank #7 behind the following:

1. Chad Johnson (with a healthy Palmer)

2. Steve Smith (Keyshawn won't take away much)

3. Torry Holt (Bad defense will force the Rams to throw)

4. Marvin Harrison

5. Larry Fitzgerald

6. Randy Moss

Solari has comitted to getting Tony the ball more, he's not being asked to block, sure he will do that.......but with Herm wanting to be more committed to long sustaining drives, Tony will be more of a target than last year...especially in the red zone. I think Tony will be back at the top, he's stated he's in the best shape he's ever been in, he's hungry, sick of hearing about the other younger up and coming TE's in the league....he has a real distataste for Gates. He will retire the best TE ever. Blocking is a weakness in Tony's game, he gets beat a lot if you watch the Chiefs games and gets called for holding more and more every year, this is bad game planning to ask Tony to block even more, IMO.

Based on DMD's FF Pts, he has Gates ranked 12th among all receivers with 168 FFP, right between Roy Williams with 169 and Darrell Jackson with 165.

probably in the 15-20 range, with guys like burress, javon walker, etc.

I'd agree with this assesment - probably 15-17 range, due to tds - his ceiling in yards is probably about 1000 but his chance to get double digit tds makes up for that.

Gonzo I'd slot in at 25 or so.
