or anyone else....how's the Addai/Rhodes deal gonna play out this season? Is Addai getting less carries because he's been less effective or b/c Rhodes has played in the system longer or is the better blocker?Or both?

Addai is the better blocker. In fact Addai is better overall, although not by a huge huge margin. But I think Dungy/the Colts feel like giving Rhodes the benefit of the doubt (at least early on) as the default starter, and are also a little hesitant to just go with a rookie. Why I don't know....

But if things continue as the are, I'd be surprised if Addai isn't getting the bulk of the carries by say mid-season. Just a feeling.

Rhodes has looked horrible. He's not using his speed, and he can't break an arm tackle. Granted he's played a couple of the better defensive lines in the Giants and Jags, but I have been underwhelmed.

Joseph Addai has looked VERY good in his limited duty. While Rhodes has put up 44 carries for 114 yards (2.6 ypc), Addai has 123 yards on just 26 carries (4.7 ypc).

Both have done extremely well in pass blocking. It's obvious Dominic worked on this in the off-season. The Colts have a cool formation with Peyton in shotgun, and each of the RB's on one side. It's been very effective so far.

The Colts under Dungy have a tendency to work rookies in slowly, Dwight Freeney didn't crack the starting line-up until Week 10, and as the year goes on, I think Addai will get more and more touches. Especially since I think an injury to Dom is very likely, given his history the last few years.

You're wrong.

Addai has looked good every time he has touched the ball. Would that continue if he got more opportunities? Perhaps.

Rhodes has not looked good. He hasn't been able to break a tackle and get extra yardage. He goes down at first contact. Addai has been able to get yards after contact.

The rumblings in Indy have already started from radio, newspapers, and fans for Addai to get more touches.

I sit in the stand every week. Everybody sees it.

Is Rhodes even worth holding on to Captain? Someone just dropped Mike Bell and I'm thinking of stashing him on my bench if/when T. Bell gets hurt.

I would hold on to him at this time. The coaching staff continues to profess their faith that Rhodes will improve. Plus, he seems to be getting the bulk of the goal line carries. He has two rushing TD's, Addai has none.

Right now, it seems to me the Colts just have more faith in Rhodes since he has been in the system longer. In crunch time against the Jags, Addai was on the bench. As Joseph progresses this season, I could see him taking a more prominent role.

It's just too early to say how things will go.

Thanks Captian. I'm gonna hold on to him for now.

i dont watch the games but i noticed the game vs jags addai only had like 3 carries!! vs the nyg he didn't have that many either. the only time he got good amount of time was in the hou game when indy blew them out, and also all the fantasy sports websites expected addai to get more work in the route. this may happen this week because they face the jets, but as a rhodes owner, i'm proud to see that it isn't a 50/50 split and in competitive games its no where close to 50/50!

No, you're wrong. I didn't see the HOU game but did see the other 2. And my vantage point - ie the camera showing me the pic on TV - was probably better than yours overall in the stands (unless you had some of the best seats in the house).

Addai has not looked good "every time he has touched the ball" ....however he has certainly looked better than Rhodes overall for sure. As for the "rumblings," sure, people want Addai to get more touches. But you act like Addai is the next EJ while Rhodes is dog pellets. Not. Re. yards after contact, both get some here and there, but neither is dazzling anybody. And while Addai's stats are obviously much better per carry, we have a small sampling size here and stats only tell part of the story.

Anyway we're probably closer to agreeing than it sounds like. I agree that Addai should be getting not just more, but in fact most of the carries (baptism by fire if nothing else).

I can't see how anyone could have seen Rhodes' play so far this year and come away thinking anything positively about him. The burst he showed in 2001 seems to be missing. He never was great at breaking tackles, but now he doesn't seem to have the speed to beat the tackler and get through the hole. He has been dropped for losses several times.

Addai is very fast to the outside. He showed that in the opener against the Giants. I was worried about his ability to run inside. He has shown that he can do that against Houston and Jacksonville.

On his TD reception against HOU, he was supposed to stay in and block. But when there was nobody to block he slipped out and caught a pass in the middle, outracing everyone to the corner of the end zone. Pretty good for a rookie in his second game.

By the way, I watch every game on TV after I see it in person as well.

I have to agree with Hook on this one. Rhodes has looked sluggish (much more so than in '01) and Addai does have much more of a burst. Addai has also done a solid job of pass-blocking. My one concern with Addai is how much his size will limit him. Rhodes has been given the rock when they're trying to pound the ball, suggesting that they will probably go RBBC this year with Rhodes getting the short-yardage duty. Whether Addai will be given the Willie Parker or Warrick Dunn treatment beyond that remains to be seen.

Addai is a big dude. If anyone should be the goal line back, it's him.

He was stuffed on a carry from the 2 yard line against the Giants.

He had one goal line carry against Houston where he fumbled.

He had one goal line carry against Jax that went for -1 yard. He was about to get another, but Dungy told offensive coordinator Tom Moore to tell Manning to run the naked bootleg.

Like I said, I think the Colts are breaking him in slowly. A few series here and there, a few goalline/short-distance, using him on third downs. When he gets up to speed, and when the schedule gets tougher, I think we'll see more of Addai. He efinitely needs more work in short distance packages.

The goalline stuff/fumble against Houston probably has the coaches believing that he is not quite ready for the majority of carries. As a Rhodes owner, even I can tell that Addai is much more explosive and a threat to take over the job at some point this year. Rhodes looks small and slow in comparison.

Everyone is so crazy in love with Joseph Addai....neither of the RB's in INDY this year will be anything more than a RB #3 all year. Never knowing who will get more carries, who gets the goal line carries etc...

Addai has gotten the ball at the goal line several times this year and....FAILED...the reason for the bootleg last week was becasue Addai go the first carry and FAILED. Addai also was did not crack the starting line up in college until like his senior year. He has had injury issue even not being a starter and who knows if he could handle being an every doen type back.

As far as Rhodes goes again nothing spectacular....I think that if anyone thinks either of the RB's in Indy are "Edge" now or anytime this season they are wrong.

RBBC most of the year....and more after Rhodes gets dinged and then again after Addai gets dinged....

This week Addai will get more yards but not more carries.....Both may find the endzone but if only one RB scores it will be Rhodes!!!

my two cents

Actually, that fumble wasn't his fault. He was stood up at the goal line, and just about when it looked like he was going to power his way in, Colts' guard Dylan Gandy blasted him. He was trying to push them into the end zone, but unfortunately, put his helmet right on the football.

He's on the average side for a featured halfback (5'11", 214). That's about the same size as Edge and Chester Taylor (although size doesn't necessarily correlate directly with power). But I'd forgotten how small Rhodes is (5'9", 203). IIRC, one of the negatives put on Addai was that he didn't carry a full load at LSU and there were questions about whether or not he could do it in the NFL.

We'll see what happens. Agreed that they're breaking him in slowly. But one thing seems clear to me at this point: Whether Addai pans out or not, Rhodes will definitely not be the starter next season. They'll go to free agency before they give Rhodes 10-20 carries/game.

How can you know this? :D

post-game interview with Dungy.

I also saw a post-game interview with Peyton, and he said Coach called the play, and the best way to sell a naked boot leg is to not tell anyone even on your own team. everyone else thought the play was gonna be a handoff to Addai, but Peyton knew different, and left the Jags picking up their jocks.... :D
