TEs - no longer a 3d round pick

In mocks I notice TEs routinely going in the 5th on down and almost never the 3d. Gonzo and/or Gates used to be a definite 3d rounder. Why the slide? More top options avail? People just not thinking top TE as big a deal? Is it El Nino's fault? What?

It seems to me that this trend is because Gates and Gonzo have fallen off slightly and others have jumped in to the mix that are producing as well as those 2. ie.. Whitten, Winslow.. With 4 TEs in the top teir now and TEs like Heap, Cooley and Clark right behind them, people feel they can wait on that position in general and still get a top TE later in the draft.

No one feels like they have to reach for Gates in the 3rd because there is generally better talent at that position overall in the league.

I think Scourge nailed it. I think slightly declining production from the top TEs and more of the tier 2 TEs producing closer to the level of the top guys has led to a flattening of the value of the position, so, much like with QBs, one can likely get similar production from a player taken a few rounds later.

No, actually, they haven't....

I think that's pretty much it too. And I think with Gates still going strong he may present his best value yet (knock on wood). I am not convinced Witten or Winslow will produce like they just did until they do it another year. The rest are good but not on the same level as Gates, or maybe still Gonzo, who actually surprised me last year w/that production.

I think Gonzo's days are behind him. He is losing a step, his WR corps is getting a little bit better (more options), and if Croyle is the QB, I just don't see him putting up that big of a year. Witten on the other hand will continue to shine as long as Romo is healthy and Dallas doesn't pick up a legitimate WR2 I like Witten a lot this year, but would look to trade him at the end of the year or during the next off season as Dallas will address it's WR2 either in free agency or the draft before the 2009 season.

They're not throwing Ryan into the fire?

When do you think he'll be starting QB?

Crumpler was released from the Falcons in February, and was signed by the Titans in March. I think he will be a 3rd tier TE at best, based primarily on his health issues of late, and the fact that the TE's have some other decent TE options.

All sound very logical - but I thought all that last year. d'oh. I'm not convinced he's quite ready to fade away, despite the age and the iffy QBs.

I don't doubt he'll do well, but how well is the question. Still skeptical about another year like last year or even very close.

I agree with the fact that the TE position is getting deeper. Last year, those of us who waited were rewarded with Winslow, Witten, and D Clark, all of whom reaped nice rewards especially when you take into account that we were able to take L Fitz or B Jacobs or the like in the 3rd round rather than Ahman Green, etc in the 6th.

I was as big on Gates as the next guy and would have certainly snapped him up had I not been drafting in the 1st spot so my 3rd round pick came up too soon and he was gone by my 4th. None the less, considering how well it worked out (when I took Winslow, he was like the 5th or 6th TE taken which, of course, I can thank a blind homer 9er fan for snapping up V Davis right before I took Winslow), I'd be hard pressed to be prepared to take a TE high any time soon.

There's easily 4 guys that could all challenge for the top spot and a handful of others that could end up not being that far behind. However, in a somewhat large league, I'd jump in and grab one if a run started so I didn't end up with the 8th best or worse.
