Hope you're all enjoying some fine eats this beautiful summer weekend What kind of smoker ya got? I have had one of those 7 in 1 smokers with the water pan for years and it is about shot. Thinking of upgrading. Any suggestions? Gas or charcoal? Would like something with more food capacity as well. TIA

Thinking of upgrading. Any suggestions? Gas or charcoal? Would like something with more food capacity as well. TIA Mine is a vertical style charcoal smoker and I love it. Mine is made by these folks but it looks like my model has been discontinued. I have maxed my smoker out with 6 chickens, 12 racks of baby backs, 2 butts and a full brisket - that was enough to feed 90 people with plenty of leftovers. I like using hardwood charcoal and wood - kinda old school. There is something very primal and enjoyable about tending a fire. There are alternatives though, that are less work and render great results. Unta should be along shortly to pimp the Big Green Egg. They hold heat better and don't use as much fuel. There are also smokers that feed smoke via electric auger and wood pellets - Traeger smokers are popular around here. I don't know much about the gas or electric models, but I know Cabelas and BPS sell a lot of them. Good luck and enjoy!

Sounds like food capacity is not an issue with your smoker. I also agree that the natural wood or lump charcoal is kinda cool. My old smoker is propane and although convenient I've always thought food tasted better when cooked over wood or hot coals so I'm leaning that way. Have several friends with the BGE and I have never heard anyone so sold on a product. Not sure I want spend that much though.
Jimmy Neutron
This weekend it was a half bushel of garden tomatoes, 3 onions, 12 jalepenos, 10 limes, 2 butts of garlic and 4 bunches of cilantro. We now have about 4 gallons of fresh salsa in the fridge for the weekend. It is, and I say this with a staunch record of heterosexuality, fabulous. Only have 2 left. This last batch I used Roma tomatoes instead of garden variety as they have very little juice and it made for a better texture than my previous batch. I also didn't de-seed the jalapenos so it is pretty spicy. The only other think I blend up is a couple sweet banana peppers and a pablano pepper per blender full. This is honestly the best salsa I've had. I took a couple of pints to work and it disappeared right away.

Yeah - I use a lot of romas to thicken it up some, but I use every variety in the garden - even the cherry and pear types. I'll have to try the other peppers - I usually just use jalepenos and/or serranos.
untateve
Have several friends with the BGE and I have never heard anyone so sold on a product. Not sure I want spend that much though. You are not sure you will want to spend that much money? My eyes always fill with tears when I hear these words in a discussion about the Big Green Egg. There's a certain sadness knowing that someone will go through life never knowing all that is the Big Green Egg. I will attempt a metaphor that may help you. As a youth, you recall how it felt when you first masturbated? It was wonderful, wasn't it? You thought you had attained the ultimate experience. At that moment, you knew only bliss. Then, at some point, you realized that masturbation can be nice, but something was missing. And then, you experienced relations with a woman and suddenly, you knew you would never be the same. You would never experience life in the same way. You view of everything was forever shifted. And you knew that you could not wait to be with a woman again. And then, you made love to a woman whom you loved and who loved you in return. The glow that surrounded the two of you was magical. Every synapse in your brain and every nerve in your body exploded at once. For that moment, you were enveloped in nirvanna. Well, outdoor stoves (gas grills) and other smokers/grills can be nice. They can make your food hot with a pleasant flavor. Your friends will smile nicely and say "Good grub." But deep down, you know that something is missing. Something that you can't put a price on. There is a need, nay, a hunger within you. The Big Green Egg calls to you--It will satiate you like no other can. In the end, you will be spent and exhausted. There will be an aura of joy that will last well beyond your meal. And as you take your last bite, you will already be planning your next cook. Do what you must, save how you will, but The Egg waits for you. With gentle smoke, deep warmth, and overwhelming love, The Big Green Egg waits for you. I'd been lurking around here awhile before I decided to start posting and have read some posts you made about the BGE and your passion for it is echoed by my friends here who own one. I actually have been strongly considering using some upcoming bonus money to buy one based on my friends rantings as well as several samples of the stuff they have cooked. With a daughter in college and 2 more going in the next couple years it's gonna be a tough sell with the wife though. That's why I'm also considering something cheaper for now and maybe trying to rathole some cash from time to time and get a BGE in a few years. BTW: Looks like Hanna is gonna come in on the east coast now. You in harms way?

untateve
BTW: Looks like Hanna is gonna come in on the east coast now. You in harms way? As of now, Hanna is heading toward Georgia/South Carolina. I live in Stuart. If you look at the top of Lake Okeechobee and go due East to the ocean, that's where Stuart is. He'll be fine. He just hides in his The Egg. The Chief has good insight.
