Report: Pioli offered Chiefs job

A Kansas City radio station, 610 Sports, reported earlier this evening, that the Chiefs have offered Pats V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli the job of general manager. However, the station cites sources who claim there are two major sticking points the sides are still haggling over: money and control over football operations.

With respect to the football operations, the report discusses the Chiefs coaching staff, and current coach Herm Edwards. It’s believed Chiefs owner Clark Hunt would like to retain Edwards, but probably wouldn’t allow that to be a deal breaker, should Pioli want to dismiss the current coach.

DEN should offer him the job, just so KC doesn't get him

But I'd rather see Marty Schottenheimer come here as GM and coach menttor

Well he did go to SD, but man I just couldn't ever see him working for the Broncos. Never know I guess.

CD and I were talking about this yesterday ... and he mentioned that he thinks that Pioli and Kirk Farentz (coach at Iowa) are very good friends and that Farentz would be first in line to be the HC.

If true, Pioli can stay in NE.

I heard that same thing as well and maybe that's what kept the Browns from further discussions with Pioli.

I don't think he would bring Kirk here, but that's my opinion. Josh McDaniels is the other name that keeps getting thrown around and to me it makes more sense.

It could be reporters speculating too. When people don't tell them what they want to hear some reporters look at people's past and guess.

If I were a Chiefs' fan, I'd say +1 to this comment. I don't understand all the hoopla about Kirk Ferentz. Iowa hasn't done squat, yet he seems to get accolades all the time as a great coach.

sources say that the offer to Pioli could be near 40 mil for 6 yrs.....tought to turn down.

one sticking point is that Pioli wants Herm fired before he accepts, he doesn't want to do the firing,

doesn't want to look like the new gun slinging sheriff in town....

I don't understand all the hoopla about Kirk Ferentz. Iowa hasn't done squat, yet he seems to get accolades all the time as a great coach.

Ferentz has developed solid NFL players like Bob Sanders, Dallas Clark, Aaron Kampman, Eric Steinbach, Ladell Betts, Jonathan Babineaux, and Nate Kaeding and has made good-but-not-great college players like Robert Gallery, Brad Banks, Drew Tate. Kevin Kasper, Jared DeVries, Tavian Banks, Tim Dwight, and Shonn Greene look like studs. His team went 8-4 without a passing game this year. The Hawks have slipped a little over the past few years, but he's historically gotten a lot out of a mediocre pool of talent. Iowa has never had Michigan or Ohio State's recruiting power (and it's not like Ferentz has helped in that regard... another reason why he may be better off in the pros). Still, for a "second-class" Big Ten team, Iowa's had some nice seasons under Ferentz...

2001: 7-5, beat Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl

2002: 11-1 (Big Ten co-champs), lost to USC in the Orange Bowl

2003: 9-3, beat Florida in the Outback Bowl

2004: 9-2, (Big Ten co-champs), beat LSU in the Capital One Bowl

2008: 8-4, beat South Carolina in the Outback Bowl

I think that Ferentz would work out well in the NFL, where he could utilize his player-development skills and not have to worry about recruiting. He also worked under Belichick on the Browns back in the '90s, so he has prior experience dealing with NFL players.

ESPN.com news services

New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli has agreed to become head of football operations for the Kansas City Chiefs, two NFL sources told ESPN's Michael Smith.

Herm Edwards recaps the Chiefs' 2008 season and addresses his status with the organization.

Pioli was seen packing up his office Tuesday afternoon, a Patriots source said.

The decision to hire Pioli likely means Herman Edwards will not be back as Chiefs head coach next season. Among the top candidates to succeed Edwards is New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

A source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Bill Williamson that Edwards found out about the Pioli hiring through the media and hadn't been told anything by the Chiefs' management as of Tuesday afternoon. Edwards sent his assistant coaching staff home to await word on the future in light of the Pioli hiring news.

Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio will replace Pioli as vice president of player personnel, league sources told ESPN.

Pioli, 43, has been with the Patriots for nine years.

Pioli should find a warm welcome in Kansas City. At the last Chiefs home game, shortly after the embattled Carl Peterson resigned after 20 years as president, general manager and CEO, several signs were spotted in the crowd proclaiming, "We want Pioli."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Wow. The Chiefs didn't screw this thing up. I am very happy yet stunned. I have to let this sink in for awhile....

Hopefully he'll be here for 20yrs too ... and we'll get a couple of nice new trophies for the cabinet in the interim.

This is a really exciting time for Chiefs fans. But I have to agree with Muck that I wouldnt be as excited about getting Kirk Farentz in here as HC. I think that the last 30 days have been more successful in terms of "rebuilding the Chiefs" than the last 2 seasons combined.''

Really hoping that the only time I see Herm in the next couple of years will be on Coors Light commercials.
