Talk about old school.

"(Sept. 9, 2005) -- After months of speculation, we finally seem to have one of the answers to the many mysteries surrounding the ever evasive New England Patriots.

Quarterback Tom Brady looks like he's calling many of the Patriots' plays.

At least that's the opinion of some people around the league who tuned into Thursday night's game.

Clearly, Patriots coach Bill Belichick isn't doing it. And Patriots quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels looked a bit timid to be doing it. But at the very least, it now looks like Brady has the discretion to call the play at the line of scrimmage, or revise whatever play McDaniels might or might not be sending into him, or might even be calling them himself.

Whatever way the Patriots have fully designed it, it's clear that outside of Peyton Manning, Brady now has as much latitude as any quarterback in the league. He's not devising the game plan -- that's Belichick and McDaniels and the rest of the Patriots offensive coaching staff -- but Brady is intricately involved in deploying it.

And, as usual, Brady did a masterful job, like with whatever he does. He helped call the plays that resulted in a performance in which he completed 24 of 38 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Not bad, though Brady was mighty miffed with a third-quarter stretch in which the Patriots struggled to expand upon their then-three-point lead. But the Patriots pulled away in the end, and Brady showed he is as good as it gets.

Now give Brady one more distinction, in addition to being a Super Bowl MVP and team leader. He is now one of the Patriots' unofficial offensive coordinators.
