rai
Westbrook having the best year of his career.. Going into yesterday's announcement, many observers felt running back Brian Westbrook would have a hard time beating out San Francisco's Frank Gore, New York's Tiki Barber and St. Louis' Steven Jackson, all of whom are having excellent seasons, and all of whom have seen the ball more than Westbrook. And sure enough, Westbrook was announced as a first alternate to those three, even though the Birds' catalyst is having a career year. Westbrook, whose only previous Pro Bowl appearance, 2 years ago, came as an injury replacement for Seattle's Shaun Alexander, could not be reached for comment last night. Tight end L.J. Smith and middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter were second alternates, the team said. Westbrook ranks just 11th among NFL rushers, though his 5.1 yards per carry are third among players ahead of him. Gore averages 5.5 yards and San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson 5.2. He also averages more yards per reception than any of the three backs chosen in front of him Did I mention that Tiki has only 2 TDs all year? I know its hard to pick three RBs from the NFC I guess it's not a surprise that Tiki gets in his last year. Clearly team record has nothing to do with pro-bowl selection, but if 2 players have similar stats (and Westy is just a few yards down on Tiki. Tiki has 2 TDs and Westy has 11 TDs. Chavez
Westbrook isn't going to the Pro Bowl because the voting process and the game are pretty much a joke. Think of it as an exhibition, where the players are picked by some strange formula involving name recognition, popularity of their team, and production.
