Poker issues… you make the call

So I was in Vegas last week and played in a Hold Em’ tournament where there were two hugh issues. I’m curious how you poker players would have handled them…

#1 – Just before the break (you could re-buy) I went all in with a Jack and something else and a Jack on the board. I was called with a pair of 10’s. 4th street is a 10, and the river is a Jack. I was all consumed in the moment of hitting the third Jack and the dealer pushes all the chips over to me and rakes the cards in. The guy with the 10’s then said, “Hey I had a boat”. I agreed, and since I was all in I pushed all my chips over to him. This was at the Tuscany Suits hotel and wasn’t the typical big casino poker room.

Question: What’s the rule in Vegas when something like this happens?

#2 – After the break we got a new dealer at the table, and she was a total beotch. After a few hands I’m the big blind at $400 and have a $500 chip on the table. Only the small blind calls it, and I told the dealer I didn’t want to raise but needed change because I had a $500 chip out there. She reaches for my chip and grabs my cards and rakes them in. I immediately said, “What are you doing? I made the call.” She then said, “You didn’t protect your hand.” Pit boss comes over and agrees with her that I didn’t protect my hand so it was fine. This wasn’t a hard core table (see issue #1) and I didn’t protect my hand the entire first part of the tournament, though my cars were in front of me close to the edge of the table. Feedback from the table was that I learned a lesson. I was pissed, and a few hands later locked eyes with the dealer as I shot laser beams at her. As we stared each other down, she said, “sorry.” I went all in with AJ four hands later and lost to bullets.

Question: Is it normal to protect your hand (with a chip or something) in all casinos? After this I’ll do it when I go back, but I’m just wondering if it’s a concrete rule and what happened happens often?

Dealer makes a mistake and didn't catch the boat, they will certainly be corrected and the best hand gets the chips.

Yes, I play in quite a few smaller casinos and you have to protect your cards everywhere.

As far as the pocket 10's go, once the cards are face up, they play. You don't get the pot. If the person threw the cards in face down and the cards went in the muck and the player said "Hey wait, I had pocket tens", they can't get the chips. In short "Cards Speak".

Story #2 - The dealer was of course wrong to take in your cards, but every card room in the world has the "Protect Your Own Hand" rule. It means it's the player's responsibility to make sure his cards are not fouled. The 1 and 10 seats are always the most dangerous, because you're closest to the dealer, and the players in the 2 and 9 seats can very easily throw their cards in toward the dealer and mix their cards in with yours. So, the dealer did make a mistake, but there's nothing that can be done about it. It happens all the time. Whenever I sit in the 1 or 10 seat, if I still want my hand, I always put at least a chip or two on top of them, and I usually keep a hand on them just to be sure.
