westvirginia
Does luck determine income? And more interestingly, does the last 16 years of corruption signal a big swing to the left?
muck
"Luck" (or randomness as I prefer to think of it) plays a substantially larger role in our lives that we would generally like to believe (or even feel comfortable with). It's far easier to ascribe outcomes to skill, talent, luck, decisions made (or not made), beliefs, etc than it is to simply shrug our shoulders... polksalet
Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I think Bear Bryant said that.
Ursa Majoris
It takes more than luck to maintain a free society. If we are to avoid acquiring a welfare state the size of Europe's, we must be vigilant defenders of the rule of law and merciless punishers of the corrupt among us. True dat. Every leftist revolution has come because of massive income inequality largely due to the corruption of a ruling oligarchy / aristocracy. Trickle down absolutely HAS to work as it is that that maintains satisfaction and satisfaction is the cornerstone of order.

wiegie
Does luck determine income? I actually assign that Alesina et al. paper when I teach comparative economic systems--it is a great paper. According to the paper, it doesn't matter whether or not luck plays a roll, but rather, whether people think it plays a roll. (I was almost certain that I have linked to the paper before, but I just searched for such a link and couldn't find it. And more interestingly, does the last 16 years of corruption signal a big swing to the left? That hypothesis also makes sense, but I haven't read the underlying paper.
